Derviş Eroğlu (2010)

Derviş Eroğlu (* 1938 in Gazimağusa , British Overseas Territories ) is a Turkish Cypriot politician . He was the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from 2010 to 2015 .

After graduating from school in Cyprus, he went to Istanbul to study medicine . From then on he worked on the island as a medic. With the first elections in Northern Cyprus (1976) he was elected for the National Unity Party (UBP) in the parliament of the Turkish Federal State of Cyprus . When the Turkish federal state declared itself independent from Cyprus in 1983 and Rauf Denktaş became its president, Eroğlu took over the post of prime minister after the parliamentary elections. With a few interruptions, he held this office until January 2004.

In the December 2003 elections, UBP lost its majority and Mehmet Ali Talât of the Turkish Republican Party (CTP) became Prime Minister. In February 2005, the UBP was again only the second strongest force in early elections ; Eroğlu remained leader of the opposition. He had already run for president in 2000 against the founder of the state, Rauf Denktaş, but withdrew his candidacy in the second ballot. In April 2005 he was clearly defeated by Talât in the first ballot with only 23%.

In the parliamentary elections on April 19, 2009 Eroğlu won with his party and he took over the office of prime minister again. In the presidential elections on April 18, 2010, he prevailed against the incumbent Mehmet Ali Talât in the first ballot with just over 50% of the votes. He took up the post of President on April 24, 2010.

In the 2015 presidential election, Eroğlu lost in a runoff against the Social Democrat Mustafa Akıncı .

Eroğlu is married and has four children.
