Ömer Kalyoncu

Ömer Soyer Kalyoncu (* 1950 in Girne , British Overseas Territories ) is a Turkish Cypriot politician. He is a member of the Assembly of the Republic and was Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from 2015 to 2016 .

Kalyoncu was born in Girne in 1950 . He studied chemical engineering at the Technical University of the Middle East in Ankara. During his studies he was a member of various youth organizations and after his return to Cyprus he became chairman of the Revolutionary Youth Association.

In 1973 he joined the Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi and was active in various positions within the party. Between 1993 and 1998 he was a member of the Girne District MP in the Assembly of the Republic . Between December 11, 1995 and August 16, 1996, he was Minister of Labor and Social Security in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. On November 14, 2003, he was re-elected to parliament by the Girne district. In a coalition government of Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi and Democrat Parti , he became Minister for Public Works and Transport.

In the early elections in February 2005, he was re-elected to parliament. In June of the same year he became general secretary of the Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi. In the early elections in 2009 and 2013, he was re-elected to parliament.

After the resignation of the government of Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi and Democrat Parti under Prime Minister Özkan Yorgancıoğlu , he was commissioned by President Mustafa Akıncı to form a government.

He speaks English, is married and has two children.
