Fatal Smile (Eng. Fatal Smile ) was a Swedish sleaze rock band that was founded in 1995 by guitarist Yüksel Unutmaz. As a band leader , he remained the defining figure of the group and the only constant member. In 2014 he broke up the band.

history

The guitarist Yüksel Unutmaz from Katrineholm , aka Mr. Y, started the project Fatal Smile in 1995. In 1996 bassist Marcus Johansson joined them and due to better possibilities both moved to Stockholm , where drummer Rickard Johansson and singer HB Anderson completed the band. In 1999 they recorded a first demo with two songs and a year later the demo Beyond Reality . The debut album of the same name was released in 2002 on the GMR Music Group label . The album was produced by Jonas Östman, the former drummer of Yngwie Malmsteen .

The drummer Johansson left the band in 2002 for an engagement with the group Juggernaut and was replaced by Robin Lagerqvist from the band Six Pack Solution. The first US tour followed in 2003, also in the opening act for Thin Lizzy . From 2003 Fatal Smile worked on their second studio album Neo Natural Freaks . In a conversation Mr. Y said: “It's not metal, it's not glam rock, it's solid, good old“ in your face ”hard rock, with a modern touch.” This album was produced by Stefan Glaumann, who has already worked for Rammstein and the Backyard Babies worked.

After its release in 2005, Unutmaz also worked in the band 8th Sin, with whom he released an album in 2006. He then dissolved Fatal Smile before bringing it back to life in 2007 with a completely new line-up. This new line-up recorded the third album World Domination , which was released by Locomotive Records . It was nominated for album of the year at the Swedish Metal Awards and was named album of the month by Sweden Rock Magazine . Fatal Smile played a subsequent USA tour with WASP and Doro . In 2012, after having completed more than 350 concerts, Fatal Smile released the album 21st Century Freaks , which they recorded over a period of eleven months. The resulting single Welcome to the Freakshow achieved gold status in Sweden. Sebastian Kronenberg praises the album on metalnews.de as a “strong sound between hard rock and sleaze metal” and that the band “despite unmistakable influences, has created a compositionally amazingly independent work”. At rocktimes.de, Moritz Alves says that the troupe proves with the album that they belonged to "the spearhead of the Scandinavian sleaze".

In spring 2014, the group started an extensive tour through Europe with the glam metal band Shameless , with 32 concerts planned. After the concert in Munich, the first of the tour, however, band leader Mr. Y surprisingly announced on April 12th that Fatal Smile would be dissolved. At this point the new studio album White Trash Heroes was already recorded and should be released two weeks later. At first, Mr. Y did not give exact reasons, but in written statements he expressed that “he has reached the point at which he has recognized that the band is no longer worth investing his heart and soul, even if he is of course knows that the timing is badly chosen at best ”. Stevie Rachelle, singer of Shameless and Tuff , criticized Yüksel Unutmaz sharply. In his opinion, he was extremely annoyed that the other band members did not stay long enough at their own merchandising stand after their performance, whereupon Unutmaz “howled around” in the locker room: “I'm tired of it. I'll break up the band and go home. ”In addition, Rachelle criticized Unutmaz's aloof rock star attitudes and his distance from the rest of his band, such as the fact that he flew to Munich alone while the other band members were on the tour bus for 20 hours. On his page metalsludge.tv , Rachelle continues to criticize this behavior as a slap in the face of all clubs, fans and the other band members. For him, Fatal Smile is just a "local, eternal opening act" trying to "make it someday". Unutmaz should stay at home in the future and “leave it to the men”, because with enough money in their backs “anyone could play rock star for years”. Shameless immediately announced that they would continue the tour alone.

Despite the breakup of the band, the album White Trash Heroes was released on April 25, 2014. The music website stormbringer.at praised it as an "official, sleazy heavy rock board with a powerful sound and great refrains that doesn't take prisoners". The accompanying circumstances elicit the comment that Fatal Smile understood how to "deliver a musical bang even in the end, which ensures that they are remembered".
