İrsen Küçük (* 1940 in Nicosia , † March 10, 2019 ) was a Turkish Cypriot politician and Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from May 2010 to June 2013 .

biography

After attending school, Küçük, a nephew of the first Vice President of Northern Cyprus, Fazıl Küçük , began studying at the Faculty of Agriculture , Soil Protection and Agricultural Irrigation in 1962 and, after completing his studies in 1966, became an employee of the Turkish State Hydraulic Engineering Office . He then worked as an industrial engineer at the Veterinary Office of Northern Cyprus between 1968 and 1973 , before setting up his own business in the field of agriculture and cattle breeding in the private sector .

Shortly afterwards he joined the Ulusal Birlik Partisi (UBP) founded by Rauf Denktaş on October 11, 1975 and was elected to the Provisional Parliament in 1976 and 1981 as a representative of Nicosia.

In July 1976 he was appointed Minister of Agriculture in his cabinet by Prime Minister Nejat Konuk and he also held this office in the subsequent governments of Osman Örek and Mustafa Çağatay until 1981. He was then Minister for Natural Resources and Energy in the Çağatay government between 1981 and 1982, before he was Minister for Health, Social Affairs and Labor in its cabinet from 1982 to 1983.

In December 1983 he was nominated as one of their candidates for the first elections to the First Assembly of the Republic on June 23, 1985. In the elections he was elected Member of Parliament and in the early elections in 1993 he was re-elected for the Nicosia constituency . At the same time he was chairman of the Ulusal Birlik Partisi in the Nicosia district.

After the parliamentary elections on December 6, 1998, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Forests in the coalition government formed by Derviş Eroğlu of UBP and Toplumcu Kurtuluş Partisi (TKP) and took over this office after Eroğlu formed a coalition government with the Demokrat Parti in June 2001 (DP) formed. After the UBP was defeated in the parliamentary elections in December 2003, he left the government and instead became Secretary General of the UBP in 2004.

The next parliamentary elections on April 18, 2009 were won again by the UBP, which now had an absolute majority. After the election of Derviş Eroğlu and a transitional government led by Hüseyin Özgürgün , he first became chairman of the Ulusal Birlik Partisi on May 9, 2010 and then officially Prime Minister on May 17, 2010. On June 5, 2013, he was overthrown by a parliamentary vote of no confidence. On June 13, 2013, Sibel Siber succeeded him as Prime Minister.
