Samuel Koch (born September 28, 1987 in Neuwied ) is a German actor . and author . He was seriously injured when he appeared on the television show Wetten, dass ..? On December 4, 2010 . jumped over a moving car in Düsseldorf with special jumping boots . He can now move his arms again. Since the 2018/19 season he has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Nationaltheater Mannheim .

Life

Samuel Koch grew up in Efringen-Kirchen in southern Baden and graduated from the Kant-Gymnasium Weil am Rhein . Subsequently, as part of his military service with the German Armed Forces, he worked as an editor in the press and public relations work of the Franco-German brigade . From the age of six, Koch was an apparatus gymnast. He did gymnastics for the Markgräfler Hochrhein-Turngau in the regional league.

Samuel Koch began studying acting at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media in October 2010, two months before his accident . Previously, he was assistant director on the film 4 Days in May by Achim von Borries and Eduard Reznik. In it, Koch also took on a role as a soldier. The film premiered in 2011. In November 2012, Koch was awarded the " Golden Compass " media prize by the Christian Media Association KEP in Berlin for his autobiographical book Zwei Leben . In 2013 Samuel Koch went on tour with Samuel Harfst , on which Koch read from his book Two Lives and Harfst played songs from his album Step Back . A concert DVD was produced for the tour.

In February 2014 he passed the acting examination at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. His thesis, in which he deals with the topic of disability on stage, is entitled The discovery of the beautiful in reduction .

In June 2014 it became known that after completing his acting training, Koch will become a permanent member of the ensemble at the Darmstadt State Theater and will initially take on the role of Prince von Homburg . He also played a role in the telenovela Storm of Love and a small role in the movie Honey in the Head produced by Til Schweiger .

On December 13, 2014, Koch was in the last episode of Wetten, dass ..? to guest. On June 5, 2016, he appeared on the show Mensch Gottschalk - That moves Germany .

In 2018, Samuel Koch celebrated his feature film debut in the film Outside in my head as the leading role Sven .

Since the 2018/19 season he has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Nationaltheater Mannheim.

On December 4, 2010, he was betting candidate in the ZDF telecast Wetten, dass ..? . The subject of the bet was that Samuel Koch should successively jump over five cars of increasing size that drove towards him. He jumped with jump boots in front flip over one vehicle. The accident occurred with the fourth vehicle that was driven by his father. Samuel Koch fell and remained motionless on the ground. The broadcast was then initially interrupted, later it was completely canceled.

Samuel Koch was treated at the University Hospital in Düsseldorf . He was then transferred to the Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwil ( Canton Lucerne ). His quadriplegia was treated there. His rehabilitation went “according to the expectations of the doctors”. He was released from the clinic just before Christmas 2011.

On the one hand, the accident led to a discussion about the safety of Wetten, dass ..? and on the other hand about the relationship between willingness to take risks and audience rating . An expert opinion by a sports scientist from the German Sport University Cologne commissioned by ZDF attributed the accident to an unfortunate chain of movement errors. As a result of the accident, Thomas Gottschalk ended his work as a moderator for Wetten, dass ..? . Co-presenter Michelle Hunziker also left the television format at the same time.

Koch repeatedly uses his level of awareness to campaign for social projects. He supports the German Paraplegia Foundation , the “ Wings for Life ” initiative and the “Penalty Foundation”, which works for children with spinal cord injuries. In addition, on the occasion of the 20th season, he supported the Christmas in the shoebox campaign of the Gifts of Hope Association . He is the patron of the “Day of Encounters” - a large family festival organized by the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR) on May 20, 2017 for people with and without disabilities in Cologne's Rheinpark.

Private

In August 2015, Koch got engaged to actress Sarah Elena Timpe , whom he married on August 26, 2016. Both met on the television series Storm of Love . The church wedding took place on August 27, 2016 in the Evangelical Church in Mappach .
