Samaritan's Purse e. V. - The Barmherzigen Samariter ( Gifts of Hope until 2018 ) is a non-denominational aid organization with an evangelical background that currently supports people in 16 countries.

The focus of work is on international humanitarian aid and development cooperation by supporting children and families in need in the context of development cooperation. It became famous through the Christmas in a shoebox campaign . This is part of the worldwide operation Operation Christmas Child , which is supported by the American organization Samaritan's Purse .

history

Gifts of Hope emerged from the worldwide work of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association founded in 1950 . The German branch was founded in 1963 as the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Germany eV based in Frankfurt am Main. From that year he published the newspaper Decision . In 1987 the association moved its headquarters to Berlin.

Since 1996, in cooperation with the international Christian aid organization Samaritan's Purse , he has also been increasingly involved in development cooperation and humanitarian aid. This was also the beginning of the participation in Christmas in a shoebox , which the Christian magazine “Decision” first called for in autumn 1996. In November 2001 the organization was promoted to Gifts of Hope e. V. renamed. In 2002, based on the gift campaign, the plant began sending its emergency baby packages. At that time Irmhild Bärend was the executive chairwoman.

“In addition to the aforementioned Christmas in a shoebox, the association has increasingly launched new campaigns in recent years, all of which are committed to the double idea of helping people in need and inviting people to the Christian faith. There are various children's aid projects, medical projects, refugee and disaster relief as well as the opportunity to take on sponsorships, but also the invitation to take part in evangelism projects. ”In October 2015, the association announced that it would sell its magazine“ Decision at the end of the year “Adjusts.

Since 2019 the association has been operating under the name "Samaritan's Purse e. V. - Die Barmherzigen Samariter ”, is now part of the“ Samaritan's Purse ”network and employs around 40 people in German-speaking countries. Sylke Busenbender has been chairwoman since then.

structure

Samaritan's Purse is organized as an association, which is led by a board of at least two people. The control body is a supervisory board with three to five members. Martin Eickhoff is the chairman and Sylke Busenbender is the managing director.

Internationally, it is closely integrated into the network of the American organization Samaritan's Purse . This aid organization organizes development cooperation projects and the international implementation of the Christmas in a shoebox (intern. Operation Christmas Child). According to the statutes, a member of Samaritan's Purse USA or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association USA must be proposed.

Memberships and supporters

Samaritan's Purse is a partner of the German Evangelical Alliance and a member of the Missionary Services Working Group (AMD) in the Diakonisches Werk der EKD , Working Group Evangelical Missions (AEM) and the Ring Missionary Youth Movements (RMJ).

Prominent supporters are Peter Hahne , Normal Generation? , Ursula von der Leyen , the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft , the then Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz and Pope Francis . As part of the 20th season of “Christmas in a Shoe Box” in 2015, 20 other prominent personalities supported the campaign, including the actor Joseph Hannesschläger , the pop singer Stefanie Hertel , the actress and presenter Franziska Reichenbacher , the violinist André Rieu , the pop singer Andy Borg and the actor Samuel Koch .

Branches of work

The aim of the organization is, in addition to practical help, i.e. development and disaster aid, in accordance with the statutes, the “spreading of the word of God and the promotion of Christian faith on the basis of the gospel”. The purposes of the association are realized in particular through “helping the needy, especially children, at home and abroad” as well as through the “publication and distribution of the magazine Decision and other evangelistic materials as well as materials for education”.

The published balance sheet of the organization shows that Christmas in the shoebox is the "main field of activity of the association". In the meantime, however, spending on development cooperation projects and humanitarian aid is also increasing.

Media activities

The association was the publisher of the magazine Decision , which started in 1963 with a circulation of 40,000 and appeared 6 times a year with a circulation of 25,000 to 35,000 copies until it was discontinued at the end of 2015.

In addition, Samaritan's Purse is one of 15 shareholders with a two percent stake in the non-profit television station Bibel TV .

A communication strategy designed by students for gifts of hope was awarded the GrossSozialPreis 2005 , Germany's largest creative and strategy competition for social marketing . The award-winning campaign provides information about the BabyNotProjekt , which supports an institution that primarily cares for babies and toddlers in need.

International programs

In the last few years Samaritan's Purse has expanded its work areas significantly. According to the association, other key areas of work are development cooperation projects and humanitarian aid ( disaster relief ). People in need are supported regardless of their religious, social or cultural background.

Humanitarian aid

Samaritan's Purse helps people in need in the context of emergency humanitarian aid after crisis situations such as famine, natural disasters or epidemics.

Areas of application (selection):

  • since January 2019: Help to rebuild the destroyed homeland of Christians in Iraq
  • since December 2017: Medical emergency aid for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh
  • December 2016 to September 2017: Emergency clinic for the treatment of war victims in Mosul (Iraq)
  • September 2016 to February 2017: Emergency aid with medical care and distribution of relief supplies after the earthquake in Nepal
  • from March to May 2020: Construction and operation of a mobile emergency hospital to relieve the local hospital in Cremona / Italy during the pandemic .

Turn on the tap

The project “Turn the tap on” enables thousands of people to have access to clean drinking water by building bio-sand water filters. In addition, training courses and workshops are offered to provide information about hygiene and water supply and how to install and use the water filter. In the past few years, more than 140,000 people have been reached in this way.

Baby emergency project

In the baby emergency project, pregnant women and young mothers are accompanied before, during and after the birth. Since 2011, two birth centers in the Philippine province of Kallinga have been supported, in which preventive examinations, childbirth support and medical care are provided. In 2018, the work was expanded to Myanmar.

In 2017, 244 children were born and nearly 300 women were cared for during their pregnancy. Furthermore, midwives are trained to help expectant mothers in remote mountain regions.

India.Freedom

Samaritan's Purse supports the India.Freedom project, which helps the so-called "Dalits", the casteless. The work focuses on education, the fight against human trafficking and health care. In the school of the project in the southern Indian state of Telangana, over 400 students were taught in the 2017/18 school year alone.

Christmas gift campaign in a shoebox

Christmas in a shoebox is the world's largest gift campaign for children in need. It has been carried out in German-speaking countries since 1996. Initially, it was worn here by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association , and from 2002 by Gifts of Hope . It is part of Operation Christmas Child , which started in 1990 and has been organized by Samaritan's Purse since 1993 . The recipients of the gifts are children in Africa , Asia , Europe , Central and South America . The campaign does not see itself as development aid , but as a gift campaign in which the Christmas message can also be conveyed. Since 1993, a total of 157 million gift boxes have been distributed to children in 160 countries worldwide (as of September 2018). Critics criticize a connection between gifts and Christian mission as well as sustainability aspects ; There are both supporters and critics in the Catholic and Protestant churches .

Finances

The association has received the donation seal of the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI) since 2003 and its degrees are checked by an auditor. The value of the donated Christmas parcels exceeds normal finances many times over, but - because they are material assets - they are not shown in the annual financial statements with the value of the goods, see above in the section Christmas in a shoebox .

According to the taz, in 2003 one fifth of the donations were spent on advertising. In 2015, according to the DZI, the proportion of advertising and administrative costs of 10 to less than 20 percent is “appropriate”.

In the TV channel Das Erste was gifts of hope mentioned as a donation organization by the DZI example in November 2012 and founded the repeated presentation of the donations seal.
