Irmhild Bärend
Irmhild Bärend (born April 14, 1939 in Berlin ) is a German journalist , editor , author and long-time manager of the "Gifts of Hope eV"
Live and act
Irmhild Bärend studied German and philosophy at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . In 1969 she received her doctorate in Berlin with a dissertation on The Biblical Quotation as a structural element in Wilhelm Raabe's work . Afterwards she worked as editor of the magazine "contrapunkt" at the Evangelical Youth and Missionswerk MBK in Bad Salzuflen and from 1974 at the German branch of the international Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in Berlin, which has been called Samaritan's Purse - Die Barmherzigen Samariter since 2019 . There she was editor-in-chief of the magazine “ Decision ” and to this day a member of the supervisory board. Inspired by Franklin Graham's aid campaign "Operation Christmas Child", she introduced the project in 1996 as "Christmas in a Shoe Box" in Germany and was then managing director of "Gifts of Hope eV" until 2004
She found her faith early on through the founder of the torchbearers, W. Ian Thomas . In November 2004, five weeks before her retirement, she fell so badly in her apartment in Berlin that she has been paralyzed from the neck down ever since.
Awards
In 2005 Bärend was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her outstanding Christian and social commitment .
