action

The former veterinarian Amandus Rosenbach is increasingly suffering from Alzheimer's . When he gives a somewhat confused speech at the funeral of his wife Margarethe, the viewer gets a first impression of his mental state.

At the urging of his son Niko, Amandus moves into his house near Hamburg . Niko's marriage to his wife Sarah is on the brink after Niko learns that Sarah was having an affair with her boss Serge. Several critical situations quickly arise because of Amandus' mental state; u. a. if he tries to bake a cake, he almost causes a kitchen fire, which Sarah is able to prevent at the last second.

As Amandus' mental and motor decline continues and the summer party of Niko and Sarah ends in a fiasco, Niko sees no alternative to placing him in a care facility. His eleven-year-old daughter Tilda does not want to accept this. She goes on a trip to Venice with her grandfather , where Amandus and his wife were on their honeymoon. From her pediatrician Dr. Ehlers has learned from Tilda that it can be helpful for Alzheimer's patients to return to familiar places.

The start of the journey by car ends after a few kilometers with a minor accident when Amandus ignores a red light. The train travels to Bolzano , where Amandus accidentally leaves the train looking for a toilet. His granddaughter pulls the emergency brake and hides in the station toilet with Amandus until the police officers chasing her have given up the search. In the evening they are found by the cleaning man Erdal, he arranges for the two of them to continue their journey to Venice. When their sheep truck is stopped by the police, Amandus and Tilda are able to flee from the loading area in good time before they are discovered. They find shelter in a monastery. The superior is so touched by the story of the two that she drives Amandus and Tilda as far as Venice. Niko and Sarah have now also arrived there by plane and check in at the same hotel as Amandus and Tilda.

The following night, Amandus von Tilda leaves the hotel unnoticed. Tilda finds him the next morning on the bench on which Amandus sat with his wife Margarethe many years ago. His illness is now so advanced that he no longer recognizes Tilda as his granddaughter and "little princess". At that moment they are found by Niko and Sarah. The four of you start your journey home to Hamburg.

Sarah decides to quit her job to have more time caring for Amandus. Niko and Sarah's broken marriage is finally saved when, nine months after visiting Venice, Sarah becomes the mother of a boy named after his sick grandfather. Amandus has a happy time with his family until he dies of heart failure in Tilda's presence . At the funeral Tilda lies in the grass and looks from there to the sky, from where she is now protected by Amandus, as he promised her during her lifetime.

background

  • The shooting took place from April 27, 2014 to July 4, 2014 in Hamburg , Schleswig-Holstein , Brandenburg , South Tyrol and Venice . The manor house Altfresenburg served as the residence of the Rosenbach family for the shooting.
  • In addition to Til Schweiger's daughter Emma, Jan Josef Liefers ' daughter Lilly can also be seen in a supporting role.
  • Originally, Til Schweiger wanted, as he told on the TV talk show Markus Lanz in March 2015, to cast the leading role of Amandus Rosenbach with the British actor Michael Caine . However, after seeing Dieter Hallervorden in the film His last race , Schweiger was so impressed by his acting performance that he decided on Hallervorden.
  • During the shooting there should have been violent differences of opinion between Schweiger and Hallervorden over a scene.
  • The band at the summer festival is Ray Collins' Hot Club, which was already seen in Schweiger's film Barefoot .
  • With Claude Oliver Rudolph , Schweiger engaged in a verbal plagiarism dispute in the media due to the similarity in content to the 1998 film by Rudolph Love me to death .
  • The film is dedicated to Herbert (Schweiger's father) and Monika (probably his mother).

reception

Reviews

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded the title “Valuable” and assessed the film as “a charming family cinema with a lot of emotion, a charming leading actress and many touching moments”.

The film website Kino.de described the film as a “fast-paced and touching comedy with serious undertones” that picked up motifs and road movie elements from earlier Til Schweiger films. The film, which is characterized by “relentless directness”, has a “high tempo” and it is “impossible not to be touched by this two-hour ride that only wants one thing: that people come together”.

Volker Bleeck, critic of TV Spielfilm , found the film to be “touching”. Although the story is “somewhat over-constructed”, the film “touches, entertains and transports” “the difficult subject of dementia in an impressively light-footed way”. In addition to leading actress Emma Schweiger, this is mainly due to Dieter Hallervorden, who shows an achievement here "which even surpasses his award-winning portrayal in the [...] cinema drama His last race ."

According to the critic of the Münchner Abendzeitung , honey in the head is "the successful, daring attempt to create everything: family entertainment, tackling a serious topic, psychological depth and slapstick jokes, laughter and tears - which film can you say that about".

The Frankfurter Neue Presse describes the film as "worth seeing"; The bottom line is that Til Schweiger “successfully tackled the difficult topic”. Above all, the acting performances of Emma Schweiger are praised, who acts completely naturally in her role, and Dieter Hallervorden, who gives his character dignity in every situation.

Rudolf Worschech from epd Film awarded 4 out of 5 stars and described honey in the head as a “warm-hearted film on the subject of Alzheimer's.” He praised Schweiger's sensitive description of the disease, “even if he omitted really extreme circumstances accompanying the suffering - such as aggressiveness -”. Dieter Hallervorden succeeds in transporting the "inner emptiness of his figure."

The portrayal of someone suffering from Alzheimer's was also heavily criticized in some cases. Joachim Kurz from the Kino-Zeit rates honey in the head as a “real nuisance” and criticizes the German Alzheimer's Society in particular for certifying Schweiger's film for authenticity and a realistic look. Rather, “Schweiger's Alzheimer's Schmonzette” systematically fades out the social reality in Germany, up to and including negating it. He constructs a “neo-bourgeois high-gloss look ... which makes you feel as if you are moving through the setting of a furnishings booklet for the hip, urban upper middle class.” Kurz advises people who have relatives with dementia themselves, “urgently not visit this Films ”.

Die Zeit also viewed the film critically : “In the end, you learn almost nothing about the patient's story, but with maximum sentimentality that only wants to be touched by oneself. One can see that as a great filmic displacement achievement. At the end of the Venice adventure, Schweiger lets Grandpa Amandus die relatively quickly, just before the care crisis, home reality, aggression and desperation could spoil the nice evening at the cinema. "

The Frankfurter Rundschau emphasized the “idealistic note” of the film: “[...] that's Til Schweiger: He consciously makes value-conservative mainstream cinema for Germany and pays special attention to the fact that his audience is released from the cinema with a certain hope . So the viewers are put in a position by a friendly director to endure so-called hard topics in the first place. "

Viewer ratings

There was systematic manipulation of viewer ratings in the Moviepilot film community . Shortly after the film opened in theaters, numerous new accounts were created from Russian IPs in order to give the film the highest rating. After Moviepilot checked and deleted these ratings, the average rating dropped from 7.8 to 5.4. The originator of the manipulation could not be determined.

At IMDb , the film has a viewer rating of 6.6 out of 10 possible points (as of July 2019) with little overall response.

Adaptations

Remake

An English-language remake was announced back in 2016 , in which Schweiger would take over the production and direction. Nick Nolte , Matt Dillon and Emily Mortimer can be seen in the leading roles . Filming began in May 2018 and the film was shot in Germany, Italy and Great Britain. First, Michael Douglas was announced for the role of Amandus, which was eventually taken over by Nolte. Head Full of Honey was launched in a few cinemas in the USA at the end of November 2018. The reviews were negative.

Stage adaptation

Florian Battermann wrote the stage version of the film script . The play was premiered on June 18, 2016 in the Schlosspark Theater in Berlin. The Low German premiere celebrated its premiere in a production by Frank Grupe on October 2, 2016 in the Ohnsorg Theater in Hamburg . The main roles were played by Joachim Bliese and Faria Violetta Giesmann. In the 2019/2020 season, the Plauen-Zwickau Theater will be showing “Honey in Your Head” with Michael Schramm and Johanna Franke in the leading roles.
