His last race is a German feature film, premiered in 2013, about the fictional Olympic marathon champion Paul Averhoff, who tries to escape the monotony of his existence in old age by re-running and participating in the Berlin Marathon. Dieter Hallervorden plays his first leading role in it after two decades. Tatja Seibt , Heike Makatsch , Frederick Lau and Katrin Sass play leading roles .

action

Paul Averhoff, who lives in Berlin and is a running legend of the 1950s and winner of the marathon at the 1956 Olympic Games , has to move into an old people's home at the insistence of his daughter Birgit and his sick wife Margot because Margot needs professional care. Until then, the Averhoffs had managed their own house and property, and the event-free, well-cared for life in the home meant an extreme change for Paul. With the kindergarten-like occupational therapy of the well-meaning home manager, he even fears, according to his own statement, of "tinkering himself to death".

In order to escape the suddenly so dreary everyday life, Paul starts running in the park of the old people's home. When other residents ask him why he is doing this, he spontaneously announces that he wants to take part in the Berlin Marathon . Despite some concerns, Margot will be his trainer again - as before.

With some residents, but especially with the home management, resistance stirs, because Paul's stubbornness disrupts the usual processes. However, when a roommate remembers his Olympic victory and even finds an old autograph card, the residents split into supporters and opponents of the project. A race in the park against the young carer Tobias, suggested by Paul in a discussion, surprisingly wins Paul after an initial deficit, because he divides his strength better. But the resistance on the part of the home management becomes so strong that the Averhoffs decided to move into the city apartment of their protesting daughter.

A few days before the marathon, Margot died of a brain tumor , whereupon Paul, brought back to the home after another argument with Birgit, had a violent attack of grief. He is medically sedated and fixed .

On the day of the marathon, however, Paul is freed by carer Tobias and a resident who was his toughest critic for a long time and driven to the start. The television became aware of him during the run and reported on "the most incredible comeback in sports history". Birgit found out about Paul's participation in the marathon and found herself in the afternoon with her boyfriend and the residents at the Olympic Stadium , where Paul, albeit a long way behind, reached the finish line and was celebrated by the audience.

criticism

“'The Last Race' is a beautiful, clever film, sometimes very touching and very determined - Kilian Riedhof may not have shot a visually powerful epic about old age, but he knows exactly what he's getting at.
In any case, Riedhof gave his main actor Hallervorden a wonderful career highlight - and after this late career highlight nobody needs to call him "Didi" "

- Susan Vahabzadeh : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Emphasizes 'big', sometimes too thickly applied, but brilliantly cast even in the supporting roles, which carefully captures the sensitivities of its protagonists. Touchingly it tells the love story of two married couples who have grown old and is about how to preserve one's dignity in old age. "
