Wolfgang Donsbach (born November 9, 1949 in Bad Kreuznach ; † July 26, 2015 in Dresden ) was a German communication scientist .

Life

From 1969 to 1975 Donsbach studied communication science, political science , ethnology and sociology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . He completed this course in 1975 as a Magister Artium and then worked in various positions at the Institute for Journalism at JGU Mainz until 1990 . During this time Donsbach received his doctorate (1981) and habilitation (1989). Between 1991 and 1993 he took on a professorship at the Institute for Communication Sociology and Psychology at the Free University of Berlin for three semesters . In 1993 Donsbach was appointed founding professor of the Institute for Communication Science at the Technical University of Dresden . In 1999 he was Lombard Visiting Professor at the Joan Shorenstein Center of the Press at Harvard University . After his retirement in March 2015 , Donsbach taught in Dresden and was chairman of the board of the Dresden International School, which he co-founded in 1990, until his death.

Wolfgang Donsbach became known to the general public in July 2009 when the Sächsische Zeitung published his open letter on the subject of xenophobia in Dresden. In the text entitled “Dresden - Wake Up!” He criticized the city administration and the citizens of Dresden and called for more engagement against xenophobia and racism , taking the official funeral of the city of Dresden in honor of Marwa El-Sherbini as an occasion . This open letter was noticed nationwide and led to discussions within the Dresden citizenship. In addition to approval, there was also criticism of this text. From 2010 until his death, Wolfgang Donsbach worked as a journalist with two series on current local political issues on the TV channel DRESDENEINS.TV.

Wolfgang Donsbach died on July 26, 2015 at the age of 65 in Dresden of a heart attack and was buried in the Johannisfriedhof . Donsbach was married; the marriage resulted in a son born in 2001.

Teaching and research

Donsbach's main research areas were journalism , public opinion , political communication and reception research . From 1995 to 1996 he was President of the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) and from 2004 to 2005 President of the International Communication Association (ICA).

For his research achievements , Donsbach has received the Helen Dinerman Award from WAPOR (2007) and the David Swanson Award from ICA (2008). In 2010 he was made a Fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA). Donsbach was editor of the twelve-volume International Encyclopedia of Communication, which is also available online (Verlag Wiley-Blackwell).
