Scientific activities

Kepplinger was assistant to Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann's Institute for Journalism in Mainz and worked closely with her in the years that followed. With her he paved the way for the Mainz School , which focuses on examining the effects of the media and in particular regards journalists as individuals.

He has carried out several analyzes of media coverage to examine the interactions between changes in society, their representation in the media and their effects on the population (oil crisis, conscientious objection, politically motivated violence, environmental damage). This includes analyzes of the effect of technical means of representation on television (camera perspectives, editing, sound) and of the non-verbal behavior of politicians on television. In recent years, he has primarily examined the development of political communication in the post-war period, the autonomy of scandals, reporting on climate change and the influence of television on election decisions.

The World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) presented Hans Mathias Kepplinger with the Helen Dinerman Award in 2012 for his services to survey research methods. The prize has been awarded annually since 1981 to scientists who have made particular progress in the methods of survey research.
