Media Tenor International AG is a Swiss company for media analysis . The company registered in Rapperswil-Jona (previously Zurich and Lugano ) examines media using the method of qualitative content analysis . According to its own information, the company maintains locations in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America and investigates the influence of media on people's perception and behavior. Among other things, Media Tenor is involved in the creation of the Oekonomen alongside several organizations .

Company history

The entrepreneur Roland Schatz has founded several companies with related activities in different countries under different, often similar names since 1985. Schatz started with the periodical Innovatio , the publication of which was discontinued in 1992. The later publisher, Innovatio Verlags GmbH , existed from 1990 to 1995. In 1993 he founded the Medien Monitor-Verein für Medieninhaltanalyse e. V. He acted as editor of the publication Medien Monitor, which was initially published every fortnight from 1994 . Due to an intervention by WDR because of the risk of confusion with its TV magazine Monitor , the Medien Monitor was renamed Medien Tenor after a few weeks ; the association was then only called the Association for Media Content Analysis e. V. Publisher of the media tenor research report, in turn, was Innovatio Verlags AG, founded in 1987 and originally based in Friborg, Switzerland. As with the various media tenor companies, the headquarters were relocated to Lugano, Zurich and Rapperswil-Jona.

The later publisher of the Medien Tenor research report was the Medien Tenor Institut für Medienanalysen GmbH until March 2005 , which went bankrupt in 2005. Schatz blamed the bankruptcy on the poor payment behavior of his customers such as Fiat and Volkswagen ; the claim from an order from Deutsche Bank was controversial . Insolvency administrator Dirk Obermüller, on the other hand, saw a strategically unfavorable property purchase as one of the main reasons for insolvency.

At the successor company Media Tenor Deutschland GmbH , Schatz was temporarily dismissed as managing director, but was later reinstated. Founded in Bonn, the company was re-registered in October 2007 to Rolandseck ( Commercial Register at Koblenz Local Court). The registered office was Lugano in Italian-speaking Switzerland , while the company address was still Rolandseck.

On November 22, 2007, the preliminary insolvency of Media Tenor Deutschland GmbH was filed with the Bonn tax office . On January 2, 2008, bankruptcy proceedings were opened against the company. In Bonn, former employees took legal action against the company because, according to their own statements, they had not been properly terminated. The company name is now Media Tenor International AG, and after several changes of address , the postal address is now in Rapperswil-Jona. The insolvent Medien Tenor Institut für Medienanalysen GmbH was officially deleted from the commercial register of the Bonn District Court in 2017 due to lack of assets.

A Media Tenor Limited operated in parallel in Dover , UK , was forcibly deleted from the registers in January 2005. According to an extract from the Companies House agency , which reports to the British Department of Commerce and Industry, the company last met its reporting obligations in the spring of 2002.

Public prosecutor's investigations led to charges against Schatz in 2010. From February 23 to July 1, 2010, proceedings for breach of trust , fraudulent bankruptcy , delaying insolvency and withholding employee shares for social security and the pension fund were heard before the Bonn Regional Court . In the end, Schatz confessed to 11 cases and was sentenced to a suspended sentence with the condition that he pays the outstanding social security contributions for all employees. The Cologne Higher Regional Court later corrected the judgment in some details of the probation conditions. The Federal Constitutional Court did not accept Schatz's complaint about the suspended sentence. Schatz (2012) protested against the judgment with a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights .

methodology

Media Tenor claims to evaluate the content of opinion-determining media, statement by statement, quantitatively and qualitatively . In addition to the individual statements, it is also recorded whether they come with negative or positive evaluations or remain neutral. A “code book” prescribes which statements are recorded and how, which according to their own statements now comprises 115,000 key figures. Every coder goes through a training course before their evaluations are used. In addition, random reliability tests would take place, which should ensure an accuracy rate of at least 87 percent. Research results by Media Tenor, for example, often played a controversial role in discussions about the quality of public service media and about license fees.

A former media analyst for the company reports that the "code books" have been changed during ongoing investigations. On the instructions of the company management, the criteria were subsequently changed if “in the research department, the department in which the evaluation is made, it was found that the evaluation does not at all match what one had thought”.

Advisory Board

Media Tenor maintains an advisory board made up of around 20 scientists, journalists and managers from 9 countries. Prominent members are Donald Shaw (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Maxwell McCombs (University of Texas, Austin), who are co-founders of Agenda Setting research. From 2006 to 2008 the criminologist and former Minister of Justice of Lower Saxony , Christian Pfeiffer, was a member of the advisory board. Former members included a .: Brigitte Seebacher-Brandt , Hans Mathias Kepplinger , Fritz Goergen , Peter Glotz , Thomas Kielinger , Thomas Leif , Roger de Weck , Freya Klier , Mathias Döpfner .

Partners and holdings

Media Tenor publications are the basis for several publications on the influence of the media in various fields.

The online media service Kress uses the quotation ranking from Media Tenor. Media Tenor is involved, along with several other organizations, in the creation of the annual economists' influence ranking, which is published for the first time in 2013 for Germany in the FAZ and since 2014 also for Austria in Die Presse and for Switzerland in the NZZ.

Media Tenor is helping the insurance group Allianz with its reputation protection insurance.

In collaboration with the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University , an investigation was presented into the primaries of the last American presidential election.

Controversy

The forerunner company Medien Tenor was accused by critics of publishing figures without a scientific basis and of using the results for campaigns primarily against providers under public law. So have Medientenor claiming to be a rate rise in the evening news in the first half of 2004 was located mainly at the high viewership during the halftime breaks of transmitted EM games. In fact, the Tagesschau was not broadcast in a single EM half-time break. It was also claimed that the broadcasting time of the Tagesschau was mainly used by viewers to go to the toilet and that the actual number of viewers was thus significantly lower. Statistics from waterworks on consumption would prove this. After the publication of these statements, according to the NDR magazine Zapp, the media tenor was unable to present any relevant statistics, but stuck with its presentation.

The Mediendax 30 ranking published by Medien Tenor also met with criticism. According to the media tenor obtained preliminary injunctions against one of the critics, Klaus Merten from the University of Münster .

A study by Media Tenor on TV coverage of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah , commissioned by Bild am Sonntag, which belongs to Springer Verlag , and was published in August 2006, received special public attention . Media Tenor Managing Director Roland Schatz claimed that the coverage of the news broadcasts by ARD and ZDF was one-sided and aimed at portraying Israel only as the perpetrator. He went on to speak of “years of negative portrayal of Israel” on public television. The television networks rejected Schatz's claims and asked him to make the methodology and basic data of his investigation public. However, Schatz refused to release the data. The ARD pointed out that the Hans Bredow Institute, after examining the research report available on the Internet, came to the conclusion that it was “not open-ended” and “not scientific”. In addition, the predecessor company Medien Tenor may be accused of "data manipulation" after a judgment by the Cologne Higher Regional Court. After a procedure initiated by the ARD, managing director Schatz was sentenced to an extensive counter-statement and to omit due to numerous false statements.

Media Tenor has repeatedly come under fire for its behavior towards its employees. In both Germany and Switzerland, for example, there were allegations of late payment of salaries.

At the beginning of 2019, Media Tenor came under criticism again after the "Bild-Zeitung" criticized the "clear opinion leadership" for itself - the whole "according to the respected quotation ranking by Media Tenor".
