Al-Arabiya ( Arabic العربية, DMG al-ʿArabīya , English written Al Arabiya , German also Al-Arabija ) is an Arabic-language news channel in the Dubai Media City in the United Arab Emirates .

The television station was founded on March 3, 2003 as part of the MBC media group. It sees itself as an independent 24-hour news broadcaster that particularly caters to the interests of the Arab world, and is considered to be the biggest competitor of the better-known news broadcaster Al Jazeera from Qatar .

The MBC group is owned by Saudi investors.

In the western world, the station caused a sensation when it released a tape on April 15, 2004 in which a spokesman identified as Osama bin Laden offered a ceasefire to European countries that were not involved in the Iraq war .
