Economists ranking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The economists ranking is a list of the best that economists in Germany, Switzerland and Austria rate unscientific according to three different criteria (research, media, political advice). Such was published in Germany for the first time in 2013 and now annually from now on. The FAZ economists ranking aims to evaluate the performance of a scientist more comprehensively. This is in contrast to the Handelsblatt economist ranking (of the competition), which only evaluates pure research performance. The FAZ ranking in Germany is developed in cooperation with other partners, published in Switzerland by the NZZ and in Austria by the newspaper Die Presse .

methodology

The economists ranking is based on the aggregation of three different rankings that measure performance in different areas: research, media presence and policy advice. For the ranking from 2015, citations by economists in scientific journals and selected handbooks and monographs from 2011 to 2015 with data as of August 2015 were recorded in the research area. It didn't matter in which year a post was published. The citations were recorded on the basis of the research database Scopus (database) from Elsevier . Since only the past five years have been considered, the focus is on the current impact. Lifetime achievement, d. H. Even citations before this period, by an economist, are not shown. The second ranking deals with the media presence of the scientists. For the period from August 2014 to July 2015, the Swiss institute Media Tenor counted all mentions by economists in national German newspapers, television programs and radio news. This goes beyond mere quotation counting, i. H. the name had to be in connection with a longer explanation in order to be counted. To do this, the quote had to be written on around five lines. To measure policy advice, the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE), ECONWATCH - Society for Political Analysis eV and the Central Library for Economics (ZBW) conducted a survey among members of the Bundestag and Landtag as well as senior ministerial officials at federal and state level. They should indicate the advice or publications of which economists they particularly value, whereby they could name a total of up to five economists. The survey counted a total of 101 participants, 98 of whom answered the question about economists.

In order to be listed in the aggregated ranking, an economist had to meet two conditions: First, he had to achieve at least five media quotations or five ranking points in the political survey. In addition, there had to be at least five citations in specialist journals from the Scopus database. The economists were ranked in each category. The first place received 250 points, all others got their points proportionally according to their performance. The overall ranking resulted from the sum of the points of the individual rankings, whereby the research ranking was counted twice. The maximum achievable result was therefore 1000 points.

A comparison of the top 10 between the three countries shows that a few economists from Germany also contribute to the economic policy debate in neighboring countries and are also present in the local media. But this also applies to the Swiss economist Ernst Fehr, who is also represented in the German top 10.

criticism

One point of criticism of the ranking relates to the aggregation of the overall ranking. The condition that an economist must receive at least five points in the media or political ranking in order to be included in the overall ranking is problematic. If researchers are excluded from the research ranking, this leads to a distortion of the research ranking and thus to a distortion of the overall ranking. Overall, the threshold of five has been chosen ad hoc. Per se, the use of threshold values automatically excludes certain scientists from a ranking.
