Margit Schratzenstaller , also Margit Waltraud Schratzenstaller-Altzinger , (born November 7, 1968 in Landshut ) is an economist. From 2016 to September 2019 she was Deputy Head of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO), previously she also held this position from 2006 to 2008.

Life

Margit Schratzenstaller attended the Seligenthal high school from 1979 , where she graduated from high school in 1988 . She then completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk . From 1991 she studied economics at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , graduating in 1996 with a diploma. A stay abroad took her to the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in 1994/95 , where she obtained a Master of Arts (MA). From 1996 she was a research assistant at the University of Giessen at the Department of Finance, where she in 2002 with a dissertation on "International mobility and international tax competition for FDI" doctorate . She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Göttingen .

Since 2003 she has been working at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research in Vienna , from 2006 to 2008 and from 2016 to 2019 as deputy director of the institute. From October 2018 to September 2019 she was responsible for external coordination of the institute, previously she was responsible for internal coordination and thus, among other things, for quality assurance of the scientific work of WIFO. From 2005 to 2013 she was represented as an expert in the National Debt Committee at the Oesterreichische Nationalbank , from 2012 to 2016, alongside Karl Aiginger , she was Vice-Coordinator of the EU framework program project "WWWforEurope - A new growth path for Europe". On October 1, 2019, Ulrike Famira-Mühlberger succeeded her as deputy head and external coordinator of WIFO.

In 2009 she was awarded the Vienna Women's Prize for her achievements in the field of social and economic sciences . In the economists ranking of the daily newspaper Die Presse , it was listed ninth in 2014 and 2015, tenth in 2016, fifth in 2017 and third in 2018 and 2019.

Since 2005 she has been a lecturer at the University of Vienna , where she gives lectures on the fundamentals of taxation . She held other teaching positions at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (2007/08) and the FHWien (2004–2006). Her research interests include European and national budget and tax policy , international tax competition and harmonization , fiscal federalism and gender budgeting .

In June 2020 she was appointed a member of the Fiscal Council alongside President Martin Kocher .

  • Economists ranking by the daily Die Presse of the most influential economists of the year: ninth place in 2014 and 2015, tenth place in 2016, fifth place in 2017, third place in 2018 and 2019
  • 2017: Mobility award from Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) in the category of research projects for climate-friendly mobility , together with Alexander Krenek, for the analysis of the introduction of a CO2 -based EU-wide ticket tax
  • 2018: Kurt Rothschild Prize together with Alexander Krenek for A European Net Wealth Tax
