Martin Kocher

Martin Georg Kocher (born September 13, 1973 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian economist and university professor . He has been Professor of Economics at the University of Vienna since 2017 . At the same time he is an affiliate professor at the University of Gothenburg and an adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia . His research areas are mainly in the field of behavioral economics , experimental economic research and sports economics .

Life

After studying economics at the University of Innsbruck , he completed his doctorate there in 2002 . His habilitation followed in 2007 , again in Innsbruck . Even before completing his habilitation, as a research group leader, he obtained third-party funding, including from the Austrian National Bank and Raiffeisen-Landesbank Tirol . He spent two years as a visiting scholar at the University of Amsterdam . In 2010 he became a professor at the University of East Anglia , which he soon left to accept a position at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. There he was already dean of studies and dean of the economics faculty and is director of the Munich laboratory for experimental economic and social research (MELESSA), which emerged from the excellence initiative .

Since September 1, 2016 he has been head of the Institute for Advanced Studies .

In June 2020 Kocher was appointed as the successor to Gottfried Haber as President of the Fiscal Council .

Martin Kocher is one of the most active researchers in the field of experimental economic research in Germany . In 2013, he was ranked 12th in the Handelsblatt ranking for German-speaking economists under 40 and in the same year was voted 38th most influential German-speaking economists by the FAZ . His essays have been published in well-known journals such as the American Economic Review and Management Science .

In his research , Martin Kocher deals with numerous topics in the field of experimental behavioral economics. For example, he published works on the influence of time pressure on individual decisions or the development of preferences in children and adolescents. In the field of sports economics, for example, Kocher and his co-author Matthias Sutter showed that referees often judge in favor of the home team when they are behind.
