Matthias Sutter

Matthias Sutter (* 1968 in Hard , Vorarlberg ) is an Austrian economist who conducts research in the field of experimental economic research and behavioral economics . He is director at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn and teaches at the University of Cologne and the University of Innsbruck .  

academic career

The Vorarlberger Sutter first studied Catholic theology at the Leopold Franzens University in Innsbruck. After receiving his master's degree in 1993, he began studying economics there, which he completed in 1996. As part of his dissertation, he became interested for the first time in the then relatively new branch of experimental economic research when he analyzed coordination processes in the Ecofin Council in preparation for the European Monetary Union . Sutter received his doctorate in Innsbruck in 1999 and completed his habilitation there in 2002.

He then worked for two years at the Max Planck Institute for Economics in Jena and in 2005/06 worked for one year at the chair of Axel Ockenfels at the University of Cologne . In 2006 he returned to the Institute of Finance at the University of Innsbruck as Professor of Experimental Economic Research. From 2007 to 2013 he was visiting professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Gothenburg. From 2013 to 2014 he was Professor of Applied Economics at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. From July 2013 to December 2014 he was already a member of the International Faculty of the University of Cologne, where he held an Excellence Professorship (Chair of Economics: Design and Behavior) from January 2015 to July 2017. Since August 2017 he has been director at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn, where he heads the "Experimental Economics Group". He continues to work part-time as a professor for experimental economic research at the Universities of Cologne and Innsbruck.

Matthias Sutter conducts research in the core area of ​​experimental economic research, with a focus on team decisions and the development of economic decision-making behavior in children and young people.

In the economists ranking of the Handelsblatt 2017, which has analyzed the research performance of economists in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland based on the quality of publications since 2012, he achieved fifth place. The results of his research were published in Science , Econometrica or American Economic Review . A popular science book The Discovery of Patience was published by Ecowin in 2014 and has since been translated into Turkish and Chinese.

Using a culturally homogeneous sample, Sutter verified the thesis of the US behavioral economist Keith Chen about the influence of linguistic parameters on saving behavior.
