history

The institute was originally founded in 1993 as the Max Planck Institute for Research into Economic Systems under Manfred E. Streit to research the transformation of the former socialist economies . In 2005 it was renamed the Max Planck Institute for Economics . This renaming took place because the focus of research shifted more and more to the "question of the driving forces and laws of economic change in general".

Due to the retirement of the two directors of the MPI for Economics, the Senate of the Max Planck Society decided in March 2014 to realign the institute scientifically and renamed it the Max Planck Institute for History and Natural Sciences and on November 21, 2014 Max Planck Institute for the History of Man .

Previously, research was carried out in the following four areas:

Glottolog

The MPI for the History of Man operates the Glottolog , a database and master's bibliography of languages from all over the world, which are classified according to their genetic relationship . The project is led by the linguists Harald Hammarström and Martin Haspelmath and the programmer Robert Forkel.
