Monika Bütler

Monika Bütler (born October 9, 1961 in Brugg ) is a Swiss economist . She is a university professor for economics and was director of the Swiss Institute for Empirical Economic Research (SEW) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). She is a member of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and a member of the Board of Directors at Huber + Suhner and Schindler Holding .

Life

Monika Bütler was a scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and visiting professor at the University of Virginia from 1995 to 1996 . From 1997 to 2001 she worked as an assistant professor at the University of Tilburg and from 2001 to 2003 at the Université de Lausanne , where she also worked as a full professor from 2003 to 2007. From 2009 to 2013 she was dean of the School of Economics and Political Science (SEPS) at the University of St. Gallen. Since February 2020 she has been responsible for the Vice-Rector for Institutes & Continuing Education at the University of St. Gallen.

She was visiting professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney and at the University of Auckland .

Bütler deals with the issues of the aging society and demography. The areas of social security, labor market and political and economic issues are the main subject of her empirical research.

She is the editor of the blog batz.ch with her husband Urs Birchler from the University of Zurich and Marius Brülhart from the University of Lausanne .

Awards

In November 2018, Bütler received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lucerne for her internationally recognized work in the field of economic and social policy and as a thought leader in the areas of demography and aging .
