Scientific work

Feld represents ordoliberal positions as a whole , and therefore advocates a social market economy, competition and a strong but lean state. In order to solve the euro crisis , he is of the opinion that one must “move from the rescue package to an insolvency order ”. He is described as a staunch opponent of government debt and expansionary fiscal policy. “ Consolidation cannot stop at social spending either ”. As an advocate of the “ debt brake ”, he was involved in drafting it in the Federalism Commission II and advocates a tightening of the “debt brake” at the state level. Feld believes that general tax cuts are possible. In return, financial aid and tax breaks, such as the reduced sales tax rate, have to be canceled.

His academic work also includes studies of the effects of direct democracy.

The empirical studies for the Swiss cantons and municipalities (as well as for the US federal states) essentially indicate that less is spent in direct democratic local authorities, less taxes are collected, there is lower national debt, fewer taxes are evaded and one higher economic power, measured in terms of GDP per capita, results. "

He is also involved in the board of trustees of Mehr Demokratie . He also said that the citizens should be asked about important issues such as the euro in a nationwide referendum .

In 2016 he was listed in the TOP 10 of the most influential economists in Germany .

In an article entitled "The fairy tale of the investment gap", Feld describes the discussion about an "investment gap" in Germany in 2017: This began in the 2013 federal election campaign, and behind this discussion were "tough interests" from parties, the federal government, the federal states and internationally Organizations like the IMF. Germany should be moved to more indebtedness. The real need for state infrastructure investments is unknown. There is evidence such as the slow outflow of federal funds for infrastructure that funding is not the main problem. At the same time, there is an excess of infrastructure, for example at loss-making regional airports.
