Christian Kirchner

Christian Kirchner (born March 16, 1944 in Potsdam ; † January 17, 2014 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer and economist .

Live and act

After completing his Abitur at the Holbein-Gymnasium Augsburg , Christian Kirchner initially did an apprenticeship at Dresdner Bank AG in Augsburg and then studied law and economics at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Between 1971 and 1973 Kirchner studied at Harvard University and MIT in Cambridge (Massachusetts) and obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Harvard Law School in 1972 . Between 1975 and 1977 Kirchner studied Japanese language and culture at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main.

Kirchner received his doctorate in 1974 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main to Dr. iur. In 1977 Kirchner received his doctorate, also from Frankfurt University. rer. pole. In 1982 he completed his habilitation at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University with the award of venia legendi in the subjects of civil law , commercial and economic law , international private law and comparative law . From 1984 to 1993 Kirchner held the professorship for civil, commercial and corporate law in the law faculty of the University of Hanover . Kirchner has taught at the Humboldt University of Berlin since 1993 , where he held the chair for German, European and international civil and economic law and institutional economics at the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics. In May 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Gallen for " his services as a pioneer of economic theory of law and functional comparative law in German-speaking countries in general and in the legal areas of accounting, competition and company law and network regulation in particular in science and practice "awarded.

Kirchner published in the field of economics a. a. on network industries, financial markets, telecommunications, transportation, external corporate accounting and corporate governance . In the legal field, his focus was on competition and antitrust law , the law of sector-specific regulation (in particular telecommunications and rail-bound goods and passenger transport), corporate and corporate law and corporate law , accounting law and corporate governance. Kirchner's legal methodology is strongly influenced by the economic theory of law , in the field of economics he is a representative of the new institutional economics .

Kirchner was u. a. Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Institute for Japanese Studies , member of the board of the Society for Comparative Law and head of the specialist group there for basic research, member of the German-Japanese Lawyers Association, and member of the American Law Institute . He was also a member of the Railway Advisory Board and the Legal Advisory Board of Deutsche Bank AG.
