Herbert Hax

Herbert Hax (born September 24, 1933 in Cologne ; † December 3, 2005 there ) was a German economist. For a long time he was a member of the Expert Council for the Assessment of Overall Economic Development and Professor at the University of Cologne .

Life

Herbert Hax was born in 1933 as the son of Karl Hax (1901–1978). He grew up in Trier , Cologne and Darmstadt , where his father was a professor. Karl Hax was a well-known economist in the post-war period .

Hax studied business administration at the Technical University in Darmstadt , the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the University of Chicago in Chicago from 1953 to 1957 . In 1957 he graduated in Frankfurt.

At the University of Cologne , he was in 1960 with the work "Vertical price-fixing in the branded" with Erich Gutenberg doctorate . He completed his habilitation there in 1964. He was initially a teacher at the University of Saarbrücken and the University of Vienna , and in 1976 became professor of business administration and holder of the chair for finance theory at the University of Cologne. In 1998 Hax retired.

From 1982–1998, Hax was a director of the Institute for SME Research in Bonn . From 1983 until his death, Hax was an honorary professor and from 1999 to 2001 as a visiting professor at the Chair of Controlling at the University of Vienna . From 1985 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Federal Ministry of Economics . Hax was a member of the Scientific Society at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and a member of the jury for the Georg von Holtzbrinck Prize . In addition, Hax was a member of the Academia Scientiarum et Artium Europaea , a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Düsseldorf , a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and an honorary member of the Center for Financial Research (CFR) Cologne.

From March 1989 to February 2000, Hax was the successor to Helmut Hesse as a member of the Advisory Council for assessing macroeconomic developments and from March 1992 to February 2000 its chairman. His successor as chairman of the expert council was Juergen B. Donges (at that time also a professor at the University of Cologne), and Bert Rürup as a normal member .

In his research and numerous publications, Hax dealt with decision theory , organizational theory , capital market theory and principal-agent theory, among other things . Hax was a committed advocate of the free market economy.

He died of a serious illness that was only discovered four months before his death. Hax was buried in the family grave at the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. O).
