Helmut Hesse (economist)

Helmut Siegfried Hesse (born June 28, 1934 in Gadderbaum, today Bielefeld , † April 16, 2016 in Bovenden ) was a German economist , president of the state central bank in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, chairman of the convention of the Evangelical Academy Loccum, Honorary Senator and Vice President of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz.

Life

After graduating from high school, he initially planned to study Protestant theology , but then began studying economics at the University of Cologne in 1954 . After three semesters he moved to the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel , where he graduated in 1958 with a degree in economics. From 1958 to 1966 he was a research assistant at the University of Münster . In 1959 he completed his dissertation on foreign trade in the development of underdeveloped countries with special attention to Latin America , in 1965 he completed his habilitation with the thesis on " Structural changes in world trade 1950-1960 / 61 " and obtained the Venia legendi for economics.

In 1966 he was appointed professor for economics at the University of Göttingen . From 1969 he headed the Ibero-America Institute for Economic Research there. In 1983 he held the Konrad Adenauer Chair at Georgetown University in Washington, DC

From 1985 to 1988 he was a member of the Expert Council for the assessment of macroeconomic development . However , he resigned from the committee of the five wise men in November 1988 when he was appointed president of the state central bank of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt , which he headed until 1998.

He was married and had two sons.

Helmut Hesse's publication activities covered a wide range of topics. His research activities focused on the areas of foreign trade , world economy and development policy ; Monetary and currency policy, as well as finance . In addition, Hesse also devoted himself to the ethical aspects of the economy.
