Olaf Sievert

Olaf Sievert (born July 27, 1933 in Demmin ) is a German professor of economics and a former member of the Advisory Council for the assessment of macroeconomic developments .

Origin and education

Sievert was born on July 27, 1933 as the son of the librarian Erich Sievert in Demmin (Western Pomerania). After the war the family moved to Ratzeburg in Schleswig-Holstein . Sievert passed his Abitur in 1953 at the Lübeck Business School and then studied economics at the Universities of Hamburg and Saarbrücken . He graduated from Hamburg in 1957. In Saarbrücken, Herbert Giersch , himself a former member of the council of experts for assessing macroeconomic development, was his most important sponsor. With him, Sievert was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. PhD. Sievert was Giersch's research assistant from 1958 to 1964.

From 1965 to 1966 Sievert worked as the general secretary of the council of experts for assessing macroeconomic developments, the so-called "five wise men". In 1968 he took up a position as full professor in the spatial planning department at the University of Dortmund . In April 1970 he also became a member of the Expert Council - as the successor to his mentor Herbert Giersch - and remained so for over 15 years. Since 1976 he has acted as chairman of the board. From 1971 to 1992 Sievert was Professor of Political Economy at Saarland University.

After reunification , Sievert held the office of President of the State Central Bank in the Free States of Saxony and Thuringia from 1993 to 1998 .

Positions

Sievert belonged to the economically liberal Kronberg Circle from 1988 to 2003, which acts as a scientific advisory board of the also free market foundation market economy .
