Hans Karl Schneider (Economist)

Hans Karl Schneider (born May 26, 1920 in Remscheid ; † August 27, 2011 in Cologne ) was a German economist , university professor and chairman of the Advisory Council for the Assessment of Macroeconomic Development in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Life

Hans Karl Schneider studied economics at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate in 1948 with a methodical study based on Walter Eucken and the Grenznutzenschule on "price formation for gas" from Theodor Wessels .

In the 1950s he worked in the Federal Ministry of Economics , where he helped set up an energy policy sub-department, and in the Energy Economics Institute of the University of Cologne , which he headed in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1963 Schneider succeeded Hans-Jürgen Seraphim, who died in an accident in 1962, as Professor of Economics and Director of the Institute for Settlements and Housing at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. From 1965 to 1969 he was chairman of the economic policy committee of the Verein für Socialpolitik . In 1968 he became a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Ministry of Economics and later chaired it for several years. In 1970 the University of Cologne appointed him professor of economics.

From July 1982 to February 1992 he was a member of the Council of Experts for the Assessment of Macroeconomic Development in the Federal Republic of Germany and was its chairman from 1985 to 1992. From 1986 to 1989 he was President of the Rhenish-Westphalian Institute for Economic Research in Essen. He was also a member of the Bundestag Enquete Commission "Future Energy Policy". As an advisor to the OECD and the governments in China and Vietnam for long-term energy programs and as a processor of energy studies around the world, he also became internationally known.

Hans Karl Schneider had been married to Gerda Pirlet, daughter of the civil engineer Josef Pirlet , since 1948 , and had five children with her.
