Gebhard Kirchgässner

Gebhard Kirchgässner (born April 15, 1948 in Konstanz , Germany ; † April 1, 2017 ) was a German-Swiss economist .

His main research areas were new political economy , applied econometrics , methodological foundations in economics and social sciences, and energy and environmental economics . From 1992 to 2013, Kirchgässner was a full professor of economics and econometrics at the University of St. Gallen and director of the Swiss Institute for Foreign Trade and Applied Economic Research (SIAW).

Life and academic career

Kirchgässner made the 1966 High School on Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium in Konstanz then made from 1967 to 1969 his military service.

For the winter semester 1969/70 he studied the subjects Economics, Political Science and Statistics at the University of Konstanz in which he with the audit for 1973 Diploma - Economist graduated. After postgraduate studies, which he completed parallel to his work as a research assistant at the chair of statistics for economists George Mortons at the University of Konstanz, he received his doctorate in social sciences (rerum sociologiae) under Bruno Frey in 1976 . After further professional positions as a research assistant at the chair of Hans-Jürgen Ramsers also in the department of economics and statistics at the University of Konstanz and as senior assistant to Bruno Fritsch at the Institute for Economic Research at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , he qualified as a professor in 1981 at the faculty for economics and statistics at the university Konstanz in the subjects of economics and econometrics. Then he was a private lecturer at the University of Konstanz for only about nine months. From 1982 onwards, Kirchgässner was a private lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (after completing a corresponding rehabilitation) . From 1984 to 1992 Kirchgässner worked as a professor for economics / finance at the University of Osnabrück .

He took up his position as full professor of economics and econometrics at the University of St. Gallen on April 1, 1992. Since July 1, 1992, he has been director of the Swiss Institute for Foreign Trade and Applied Economic Research (SIAW) at the University of St. Gallen.

He was a Research Fellow of the CREMA Center for Research in Economics, Management and the Arts.

On the occasion of the Dies academicus 2011 of the University of Friborg , the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2001 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

Kirchgässner had been married since 1976 and had a daughter.
