Christian Welzel

Christian Welzel (born March 25, 1964 in Saarbrücken ) is a German political scientist and Vice President of the World Values ​​Survey .

Career

Christian Welzel studied political science and economic history at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . After a Magister Artium (MA), he earned a doctorate in political science at the University of Potsdam in 1996 with the work Democratic Elite Change: The Renewal of the East German Elite from a Democratic-Sociological Perspective . In the following years, Welzel worked as a research assistant at the Social Science Research Center in Berlin and completed his habilitation in 2000 with the monograph Vanishing Point Human Development: On the Fundamentals of Democracy and the Causes of Its Spread in Political Science at the Free University of Berlin . He then taught and researched for a year at the University of Potsdam as a substitute professor at the chair “Government system of the Federal Republic of Germany”. In 2001 Welzel moved to Jacobs University Bremen as an Associate Professor of Political Science , where he received the title of Professor in 2006. As a program coordinator, he was also in charge of the Integrated Social Science undergraduate and graduate program and the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences.

Welzel has been teaching and researching at Leuphana University in Lüneburg since 2010 as Professor of Political Culture Research at the Institute for Political Science and the Center for Research on Democracy. Also in 2010 he acquired a research professorship at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, Russia. In addition to Russia and Germany, Welzel has been researching as an associated guest researcher at the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) at the UC Irvine University of California, Irvine in the USA since 2006 . Value orientations, changing values ​​and the World Values ​​Survey

Christian Welzel's research focuses primarily on the question of how the value orientations of normal people change the political culture in today's societies. His research is based on data from the World Values ​​Survey . Christian Welzel has been a board member and vice president for research for the World Values ​​Survey Association since 2008. Researchers from all over the world are currently working on the sixth wave of this survey. Christian Welzel leads the project in Germany. 2000 people, half from West Germany and half from East Germany, were asked about their values ​​in 2013 for this purpose. The subjects then took part in an online experiment to examine the relationship between a person's values ​​and willingness to cooperate . The project is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

His latest book was published in December 2013 under the title "Freedom Rising" by Cambridge University Press .
