Reinhard "Reiner" Eichenberger (born July 1, 1961 in Zurich ) is a Swiss economist . He is a full professor for the theory of financial and economic policy at the University of Friborg in Switzerland and research director of the CREMA (Center for Research in Economics, Management, and the Arts).

Life

Eichenberger graduated from Zurich in 1986 with a degree in economics . This was followed by a doctorate (1991) and habilitation (1998) in economics at the University of Zurich . From 1984 to 1991 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Empirical Economic Research at the University of Zurich with Bruno Frey and Peter Zweifel . From 1991 to 1998 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Empirical Economic Research at the University of Zurich. Since November 1998, as successor to Walter Wittmann , he has held the chair for the theory of financial and economic policy at the University of Freiburg .

He is co-editor of the international economic journal Kyklos and a member of the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom). Until the end of 2006, he was a part-time judge in the Federal Appeals Commission for Competition Issues. Together with Bruno Frey he developed the concept of the FOCJ .

His areas of specialization are economic and financial policy, economic analysis of the political process and political institutions, deregulation of politics, the connection between economics and psychology.

Eichenberger takes part in current political discussions in Switzerland. In 2010, the business magazine Bilanz ranked him fifth among the most influential Swiss economists. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung voted him in 2014 and from 2016 to 2018 the second most influential economist in Switzerland. In 2015 he was ranked 4th.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in Switzerland and around the world to Eichenberger said, for cost reasons, for a prevalence of a large part of the population within the meaning of the controversial herd immunity theory and was sure criticized by the health authorities.

He is a member of the board of trustees of the association Mehr Demokratie and a member of the board of trustees of the Max Schmidheiny Foundation .

Reiner Eichenberger is married and has two daughters. The family lives on Lake Zurich.
