Kai A. Konrad (* 1961 in Heidelberg ) is a German economists with the research focus finance .

Life

Kai Konrad received his doctorate from the University of Munich in 1990 and completed his habilitation in 1993 . He has researched and taught at the Universities of Munich, Bonn , Bergen (Norway) and the University of California in Irvine. From 1994 to 2009 he was a university professor in the economics department at the Free University of Berlin and from 2001 to 2009 director at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB). He has been a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society since 2009, from 2009 to 2010 he was Director at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law , and since 2011 he has been Director at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public finance .

In the Handelsblatt Ökonomen Ranking, which has analyzed the research performance of economists in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland based on the quality of publications since 2004, it achieved 6th place (2011 and 2013) and 5th place (2015 and 2017).

He was co-editor of the Journal of Public Economics from 2007 to 2018 . He was at times co-author and editor of various other international journals in economics and political science. He has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Federal Ministry of Finance since 1999 , was its deputy chairman from 2007 to 2010 and its chairman from 2011 to 2014. His research areas are finance, microeconomics and new political economy . He has written more than 100 articles in international economic and political science journals.

In August 2013, Konrad predicted an uncertain but finite life expectancy for the euro in a WELT interview.

Konrad has been a member of the German Academy for Technical Sciences acatech since 2012 . In 2013 Konrad was admitted to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Academia Europaea , in 2014 to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and in 2015 to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Konrad is a member of the scientific advisory board of the economic policy journal Wirtschaftsdienst .
