Tobias Thomas (economist)

Tobias Thomas (born April 30, 1975 in Duisburg ) is a German economist and general director of Statistics Austria. He is also adjunct professor of economics, especially political economy and the influence of media research, at the Dusseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) of the Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf and Research Fellow at the Center for Media, Data and Society (CMDS) of the Central European University ( CEU) in Budapest . In addition, Thomas is a member of the Committee for Economic Systems and Institutional Economics of the Verein für Socialpolitik , the largest economists' association in German-speaking countries. In Economists Ranking 2019 of the most influential economists of the press, FAZ and Neue Zürcher Zeitung has Thomas Rank 5 in Austria.

Life

Thomas studied economics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and Technische Universität Berlin and received his doctorate summa cum laude from the Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg in 2006 . Research stays took him to Columbia University in New York (USA) at the invitation of Anya Schiffrin and Nobel Prize in Economics, Joseph E. Stiglitz . Thomas is a founding member of ECONWATCH - Society for Political Analysis e. V. in Berlin and was its chairman from 2003 to 2019. From 2017 to May 2020 Thomas was director of the Austrian economic research institute EcoAustria . Since June 2020 he has been General Director of Statistics Austria .

Scientific work

As part of his research at the interface between economics and psychology, Thomas analyzes decision-making processes and actor behavior in an economic and political context. His research interests are in particular the economy of political reforms and the influence of the media on perception and behavior. His research results on the influence of media coverage on the population's concerns about migration were published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization (JEBO); the analysis of the influence of media coverage on voting intentions in the European Journal of Political Economy (EJPE); his research on the role of the media in democracies in the constitutional political economy (CPE). In addition, Thomas examines in his applied research questions of the sustainable design of public finances and social security systems as well as the competitiveness of business locations. Thomas is regularly present in national and international media, for example in BusinessDay , Der Standard , Die Presse , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Swiss Month , Trend or Wirtschaftswoche .
