Melissa Fleming

Melissa Ruth Fleming is an American journalist and UN official. Since September 1, 2019, she has been Head of the United Nations Global Communications Department .

education

Fleming studied German at Oberlin College, Ohio , from 1982 to 1986 . She completed this course with a bachelor's degree. From 1988 to 1989 she studied broadcast journalism at Boston University, Massachusetts . In this course she obtained a master’s degree.

Professional background

From 1989 to August 1994 she worked as a public relations specialist for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty in Munich. From September 1994 to January 2001 she worked as head press spokeswoman for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna and from January 2001 to June 2009 for the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA in Vienna, i.e. during the time when the IAEA was its Conducted nuclear inspections in Iran, Iraq and North Korea and was awarded the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.

From July 2009 to 2019 she worked as chief press officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva. Fleming attracted a lot of attention in Germany and Europe with her statements on the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 : At the time, she saw Germany alone in the refugee crisis, but by no means in a desperate situation. On the contrary, the refugees also offer great opportunities for the country. Fleming is recognized worldwide as an important expert on refugee issues. In her book “Doaa - My Hope Carried Me Across the Sea” she tells the escape experiences of a young Syrian woman and thus makes the suffering of people on the run tangible and understandable for everyone.

On September 1, 2019, she became Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and, replacing Alison Smale, Head of the UN Department of Global Communications.
