Franz Alt studied political science , history , philosophy and theology at the Universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Heidelberg . In 1967 he was charged with a dissertation on Konrad Adenauer doctorate . From 1968 to 2003 he mainly worked for Südwestfunk (SWF, today: SWR ), for which he moderated the political magazine Report for 20 years . The publication of the book Peace is Possible , in which Alt reported doubts about the policy of retrofitting , led to years of legal disputes between Alt and his station. From 1992 to 2003 Franz Alt headed the future editorial team at SWR and also moderated the magazines Querdenker and Grenzenlos in 3sat . His books have been translated into twelve languages and have a circulation of over two million.

He plans to start a "solar world revolution". Alts work has received several awards, including a. with the Adolf Grimme Prize , the Golden Camera , the first German Solar Prize in 1994, the European Solar Prize 1997, the Environment Online Award, the Human Rights Prize AWARD 2003 and the Environment Prize of German Business in 2004.

On his homepage on the sunny side , Franz Alt gives an overview of the alternatives of energy generation - renewable energies, solar building, solar economy - as well as the topics of climate change , climate policy , greenhouse effect , ecological transport turnaround , ecological water management, organic farming, ecological tax reform , peace and human rights (" War for Oil or Peace from the Sun ”).

As a professing Christian , Franz Alt justifies his commitment to ecology out of his faith, for example in his work The Ecological Jesus .

Franz Alt supports the aid organization Andheri-Hilfe , with whose founder Rosi Gollmann he wrote the book A better world is possible .

In addition to his own journalistic activity, Alt also acts as an editor, among other things he edited texts by Carl Gustav Jung .

In October 2006, the interview volume You mustn't split the core will be published . In an interview with two journalist colleagues, Alt looks back on his life, his childhood in a well-protected home, his student years and his experiences as an employee of public radio and television.

Alt is a member of the Magic Circle of Germany . For 40 years he has been giving public performances as a hobby magician under the stage name Francesco Altini .

Political commitment

Franz Alt during an interview with Helmut Kohl (center) at the CDU Bundestag election party, October 3, 1976

In 1963 Alt joined the CDU . After the Chernobyl reactor disaster in April 1986, he wrote an open letter to Helmut Kohl who criticized the CDU for continuing to stick to nuclear energy. In 1988, Alt left the CDU. Since then he has given up political activity, but is mainly close to the ödp , of which he is the most prominent advocate outside the party. At the end of the 1970s, Herbert Gruhl, who later became the federal chairman of the Austrian Federal Parliament , entrusted him with his growing differences with his former party, the CDU. Since the party was founded, Alt, although a member of the CDU until 1988, has repeatedly expressed positive views about the ödp, for example in the run-up to the 2002 federal election .

When Alt wrote an open letter to the then CDU General Secretary Heiner Geißler on the occasion of his resignation, he recommended reading the basic program of the ödp to the supporters of his former party :

“But I recommend all Christian Democrats and value-oriented people to read the basic program of the Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) of the former CDU member of the Bundestag Herbert Gruhl. This party does without the 'C' in the party name, but its program gives an idea of what a Christian-inspired one could be today: Conservative, in the truest sense of the word. "

At the 1992 ödp federal party conference , Alt gave a lecture on his book Schilfgras instead of Atom (1992). The party awarded him the Golden Swallow at that time .

In October 2000, Franz Alt wrote an open letter to Angela Merkel , in which he reminded her of her earlier statements on " ecological tax reform " when she was President of the 1995 World Climate Summit in Berlin. At the time, Merkel said that an ecological tax reform was a prerequisite for an effective environmental policy and that she therefore supported these demands. As the environment minister at the time, she was grateful for the people's ecological commitment. Since she has now called the "already quite modest red-green entry into an ecological tax reform a knockout tax", he demanded a logical justification: "For years you wrote and spoke of" responsibility " in your pleading for ecological taxes and "preservation of creation". Does all of this suddenly no longer apply just because you are in the opposition? "

Franz Alt is a founding member and member as well as the former spokesman of the board of trustees of the Solidarity Modern Institute . He is also a member of the board of trustees of the ÖDP- related Foundation for Ecology and Democracy .

Alt is committed to the " Stuttgart 21 " project. He criticizes the project's poor cost-benefit ratio (KNV) and emphasizes that every euro invested there is missing from other infrastructure investments with a far better KNV.

reception

According to Micha Brumlik, Alt's image of Jesus is criticized by some theologians as a “one-sided and cheap projection of current ideological ideas”: the pacifist Jesus, the ecological Jesus, the feminist Jesus. In addition, he was accused of playing the God of the New Testament as "God of love" against the God of the Old Testament as "God of vengeance and war", which not only Jews and representatives of the Judeo-Christian dialogue as anti-Judaistic and would criticize anti-Semitic ideas. Fritz Rumler goes even further in his criticism of Alt's work Jesus - the first new man , on the basis of which he attested Alt " sectarian sense of mission ": "Because under the different titles there is always the same suada , out of anger of confession and conversion fever, arrogance of the righteous and contrition of the sinner, hostility to rationality, new-age know-it-all including a catalog of catastrophes; a spiritual kitchen that smells of sectarianism and yesterday. "

In the opinion of his critics, Alt fails to make a clear distinction from right-wing extremist ideologies (see publications, inter alia, in the national newspaper ). He accepts that his prominent name will be used to advertise the image of right-wing extremist organizations. Alt counters the allegations that he himself has nothing to do with right-wing extremist organizations, but that one also has to deal with them, since the members there and the readers of these newspapers are also people.

Christoph Scheuring attributed a prophetic habitus to Alt: “He reverently planes his sayings from the great block of wisdom, and every sentence is a moral exclamation mark. 'Who, if not us, and when, if not now?' he asked from his pulpit. "
