Hiltrud Marion "Hillu" Schwetje , at times Hiltrud Schröder, also Hiltrud Hensen from her first marriage (born December 11, 1948 in Hanover as Hiltrud Marion Hampel ) was married to the SPD politician Gerhard Schröder from 1984 to 1997 , who during the joint marriage was elected Prime Minister of Lower Saxony in 1990 .

Life

Schwetje grew up in Lehrte near Hanover . Her father was an engineer in a cement factory . She studied politics and social sciences at the University of Hanover . Her first marriage to a police officer failed. The two daughters stayed with their mother.

In 1978 Schwetje joined the SPD in the Burgdorf local club near Hanover. During the 1980 election campaign, she met Gerhard Schröder on a bicycle tour organized by the SPD. After Schröder separated from his second wife Anne Taschenmacher , the two married on June 15, 1984 at the Lehrte registry office .

Schwetje has had her own office in the State Chancellery since her husband was elected Prime Minister in 1990 . The avowed vegetarian was very popular as a committed nature and animal rights activist and nuclear power opponent . In 1992 she took over the management of the state foundation “Children of Chernobyl”; after her divorce from Schröder she continued with the association “Help! Help for people in need ”continues its work for the victims of the Chernobyl disaster . In addition to her voluntary work, she also took care of some political areas. The marital rift in 1997 between Gerhard and Hiltrud Schröder was spread and commented on by the public press for several months. The divorce was registered in Lehrte on September 25, 1997.

On September 13th, 2008 Schwetje married the dentist Klaus-Henning Schwetje from Sehnde . In April 2010 she took part in the Let's Dance show on RTL , but had to leave the competition due to a knee injury. She has been separated from her husband since 2011.

Schwetje has two daughters and several grandchildren.
