Heribert Schwan

Heribert Schwan (born December 2, 1944 in Betzdorf ) is a German journalist , writer and author of numerous television documentaries.

Life

Heribert Schwan was born in Betzdorf an der Sieg and grew up in Wallmenroth . He studied history, German and political science and did his doctorate on the radio policy of the French occupying power. He worked as a freelance television writer for Radio Bremen , Saarländischer Rundfunk and Südwestfunk before becoming editor in the Politics and Current Affairs department of Deutschlandfunk in 1974 .

In 1984, together with Werner Filmer, he received honorable recognition at the Adolf Grimme Prize for The Repressed Danger: What Remains of Hitler - Neo-Nazism Today .

Schwan switched to West German Broadcasting in 1989 . He worked in the Inland program group, from 1992 to 2002 in the Culture and Science program area. The main task was the editorial responsibility for cultural features in the ARD program and on WDR television. In 1993 he also took over the ARD Kulturweltspiegel , which under his leadership became the market leader of all cultural magazines on television. Since 2004 he has been responsible for special projects in the feature area for ARD. Since 1973 Schwan has authored more than 60 television documentaries. In over 20 years at WDR he was editorially responsible for 574 programs, including the series Bilderbuch and Kulturweltspiegel. The thematic focus of his films is the history of the Third Reich and the two German states. Schwan retired in December 2009.

Heribert Schwan is the author and co-author of historical books and has published biographies on Richard von Weizsäcker , Helmut Kohl , Johannes Rau , Oskar Lafontaine , Wolfgang Schäuble , Roman Herzog and Erich Mielke, among others . The book accompanying his documentary of the same name, Der SS-Mann , was published together with Helgard Heindrichs . Josef Blösche - Life and Death of a Murderer ( Droemer- Verlag 2003). On the basis of the extraordinarily willing cooperation of the former GDR spy Lilli Pöttrich , the book Das Spinnennetz , written together with Helgard Heindrichs, was published in 2005 by Droemer Verlag . Schwan is the commissioner of the three-volume Helmut Kohl memoirs and the diary on the donation affair, which became a bestseller in 2000. In 2010, Patmosverlag published Helmut Kohl - Virtuose of Power ; Rolf Steininger is co-author. In June 2011, Schwan's biography of Chancellor's wife Hannelore Kohl followed in Heyne-Verlag , The woman at his side - life and suffering of Hannelore Kohl . Schwan thus took first place on the Stern and Focus bestseller lists in 2011. The biography of Hannelore Kohl led to a legal dispute with her two sons.

From the summer of 2014 Schwan was involved in a legal dispute with Helmut Kohl. Kohl successfully sued Schwan for the release of tapes on which work meetings from 2001 are recorded. In the opinion of the Cologne Higher Regional Court, the publication of the quotations constitutes an unlawful breach of trust.

In spring 2017, the Cologne Regional Court ruled that the book Legacy: The Kohl Protocols had seriously violated Helmut Kohl's personal rights. Schwan is also obliged to provide information about the type, scope and whereabouts of any copies of the tapes.
