Andreas Englisch (born June 6, 1963 in Werl ) is a German journalist who has specialized in reporting from the Vatican .

Life

After graduating from Marien-Gymnasium Werl in 1983, studied English literature and journalism in Hamburg .

He moved to Rome in 1987 , only planned for half a year to learn Italian there. He lives there to this day. Englisch headed the Roman correspondent office of Axel Springer Verlag for ten years . Until the end of March 2010 he was a permanent correspondent for Italy and the Vatican exclusively for Bild und Bild am Sonntag . Then he was recalled by Bild's editor-in-chief Kai Diekmann and assigned to another position in the publishing house. English had spoken a few weeks earlier on the show Hart but fair on the subject of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church .

Since 1995 he has sometimes accompanied the Popes on their journeys by plane. In 2004 he wrote a biography of his experiences during his travels with Pope John Paul II . English is also the author of two novels .

During his travels with John Paul II he changed from the original papal critic to the papal admirer, which he traced in his papal biography John Paul II. The Secret of Karol Wojtyla (2004). In the years that followed, his books God's Traces (2006) and The Miracle Pope (2011) were published, in which he characterized John Paul II as the “miracle pope”, while at the same time exposing the Polish belief in miracles as an error based on the deceptions of those around him.

English later received public attention through his prediction, based on earlier statements by Ratzinger, that Pope Benedict XVI. will resign from office, which turned out to be correct in February 2013.

English presented the story behind the Giuseppe Gulotta case to the public .

He sharply describes the pontificate of Pope Francis as a merciless struggle behind the scenes in which the Pope confronts a hostile and deeply networked curial apparatus.

Observers, who judge English's publications very critically and accuse him of excessive enrichment of his descriptions with invented or deliberately exaggerated embellishments, agree that he was very close to the curial events under Pope John Paul II. On the other hand, it is unclear what sources and accesses he still has today.

Andreas Englisch is married and has one son.
