Civil society engagement

She has been living at the Jamel Forest Farm in the municipality of Gägelow in Northwest Mecklenburg since 2004 . In 2012 they were awarded the German Newspaper Citizens' Prize. The readers, listeners and viewers of the NDR and four major north German daily newspapers both voted for “Heroes of the North 2011”. The background to these awards is that the couple resisted the fact that the village of Jamel is a stronghold of the neo-Nazi scene in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

On the night of August 13, 2015, the Lohmeyer family's forester's barn burned down completely. A holiday guest noticed an unknown person on the Forsthof shortly before the fire, said Birgit Lohmeyer after the fire. Interior Minister Lorenz Caffier (CDU) said on the same day that he was assuming a right-wing extremist background because of the commitment of the Lohmeyer couple. According to prosecutors, the fire was started intentionally. The perpetrator (s) could not be identified.

Political commitment

In September 2018 Birgit Lohmeyer joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany . She ran for the Northwest Mecklenburg District Council and the Gägelow municipal council in May 2019 , but did not win a mandate in either case.
