Party presidency

Along with Interior Minister Günther Beckstein, Huber was considered to be the most promising successor to Edmund Stoiber as Bavarian Prime Minister in the event of his entry into the federal government after the 2005 federal elections . But Stoiber surprisingly shied away from it. After Stoiber's announcement of his resignation at the beginning of 2007, Huber was considered the most promising candidate among the applicants for the party chairmanship, alongside Horst Seehofer and Gabriele Pauli . With 58.19% of the delegate's votes, he was elected as the new party chairman on September 29, 2007 at the CSU party congress.

Because the result for the CSU in the state elections in 2008 (43.4%) was below expectations , Erwin Huber announced his resignation from the party chairmanship at a special party convention of the CSU on October 25, 2008. Horst Seehofer was elected as his successor by the party congress .

Huber has been a member of the district council of the Dingolfing-Landau district since 1972 . From 1988 to 1994 he was Secretary General of the CSU.

In October 1994 Huber was appointed Minister of State and Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery in the Bavarian State Government led by Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber . From November 1995 to October 1998 he was Bavarian State Minister for Finance. From 1998 Huber was again Minister of State and Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, and from October 2003 he was also Minister of State for Federal Affairs and Administrative Reform. In December 2005 Huber moved to the department for economics and transport . After changing the office of Prime Minister in October 2007, Günther Beckstein appointed him Minister of State for Finance .

In February 2008, Huber was accused of withholding information about BayernLB's financial condition . The opposition in the Bavarian state parliament then demanded his resignation (in the run-up to the Bavarian local elections). With the failure of the Transrapid and the announcement of BayernLB's first quarterly figures for 2008 (further loss of 2 billion euros), the calls for resignation increased - an investigative committee in the state parliament was later unable to confirm the accusation made against Huber. After it became known in October 2008 that BayernLB would apply for federal aid of over 5.4 billion euros as a result of the global financial crisis, Huber announced his resignation as Bavarian finance minister. He therefore resigned from the state government in October 2008. In October 2017, he decided not to run again for the elections to the Bavarian State Parliament in 2018.
