Georg Freiherr von Waldenfels (* October 27, 1944 in Hof as Georg Meyer ) is a Bavarian politician ( CSU ), manager and sports and cultural functionary.

Life

Georg von Waldenfels was born as Georg Meyer. His father had died in World War II before he was born; In 1968 he was adopted by his mother's second husband, who came from the Waldenfels family. After graduation Georg von Waldenfels studied from 1964 to 1968 at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Würzburg Law . In 1965 he was reciprocated in the Corps Franconia Munich . After completing his studies and legal clerkship , he worked as a lawyer .

politics

In 1974 von Waldenfels was elected to the Bavarian state parliament for the CSU . The appointment as State Secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs took place in 1978 by Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss . On September 30, 1987 he became Bavarian State Minister for Federal Affairs and Plenipotentiary of the Free State of Bavaria at the federal government in the third Strauss cabinet . In the same year the division of responsibilities in the Bavarian State Government was reorganized and his portfolio expanded: Von Waldenfels now acted as "Bavarian State Minister for Federal and European Affairs" . According to the cabinet decision, his office comprised the following tasks: Representative of the Free State of Bavaria at the federal level, participation in foreign affairs of internal German relations and defense, promotion of Bavarian concerns vis-à-vis intergovernmental institutions, especially the European Communities. After Strauss's death in October 1988, the government was reshuffled , and von Waldenfels moved to the Streibl cabinet in the same position . After the state elections in 1990, von Waldenfels was appointed Bavarian State Minister of Finance by the Prime Minister on October 30th . The "Zwick Affair" occurred during his time as Finance Minister ; the investigative committee set up for this purpose by the Bavarian state parliament certified that von Waldenfels was not personally responsible for the affair. As finance minister, he pushed through a further privatization of state holdings. a. the sale of the Bayernwerk to VIAG, and supported the establishment of the Saxon financial administration by Bavaria. He resigned his ministerial office in autumn 1995, since he was appointed to the VIAG board of directors on January 1, 1996 . In May 1996 he also resigned his state parliament mandate, but remained CSU district chairman of Upper Franconia until 1999.

At VIAG , von Waldenfels took over the economics and politics department that was newly created for him. In addition, he was a member of the Bayernwerk AG Supervisory Board from July . He retained both positions until the merger of VIAG with VEBA to form today's E.ON in 1999. From 2003 to the end of fiscal year 2012, von Waldenfels was on the supervisory board of E.ON AG. He is also a member of the board of directors of Deutsche Bahn AG and a lawyer at the international law firm Clifford Chance. In addition, he chairs the board of trustees of the Friedrich Baur Foundation and exercises shareholder rights at Baur Versand (Friedrich-Baur-GmbH).

Sports association work

From 1983 to 2000 von Waldenfels was President of the Bavarian Tennis Association . In December 1999 he was elected President of the German Tennis Association (DTB) to succeed Karl Weber . In 2011, after a twelve-year term in office, he withdrew his candidacy for re-election and thus avoided a battle vote against Karl-Georg Altenburg , who was elected as his successor.

Cultural promotion

Von Waldenfels has been chairman and treasurer of the Society of Friends of Bayreuth , the oldest and largest association for the Bayreuth Festival , since June 2010 . He is also the chairman of the board of trustees of the Technical University of Munich and an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts . On June 19, 2020, he became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bayreuth Festival.

Awards and private matters

For his services, von Waldenfels received the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1983 and the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1986. Since October 2000 he has been an honorary citizen of the city of Hof . He is divorced and has four children from his marriage and one other daughter.
