Hans Kraus (politician, 1879)

Johann "Hans" Georg Kraus (born April 22, 1879 in Unterafferbach ; † May 30, 1952 in Graefelfing ) was a German economist and politician ( CSU ). From 1932 to 1944 he was head of the Bavarian Chamber of Accounts , 1946 State Secretary and Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery and from 1947 to 1950 Bavarian State Minister of Finance .

Life

After graduating from high school in Aschaffenburg , Hans Kraus studied philosophy, economics and law at the universities in Munich and Würzburg . As a student in Würzburg and Munich, he was an active member of the Catholic connections KStV Walhalla and KStV Ottonia in the KV and founded the Isaria Association in the KV in 1921 in Weihenstephan . Kraus joined the Bavarian civil service in 1903, later switched to financial administration and worked for the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance from 1919 to 1932. In 1924 he graduated as Dr. oec. publ. and in 1928 he received his appointment to Ministerial Counselor. From 1932 until his retirement in 1944 he was head of the Bavarian Chamber of Accounts. Before 1933 he was a member of the BVP and financial policy advisor to Prime Minister Heinrich Held . In 1934 he was entrusted with drafting a state budget order.

After the Second World War , he joined the CSU in 1945; from 1946 to 1950 he was a member of the CSU state executive. Kraus continued his career in financial administration and was appointed Ministerial Director in the Bavarian State Chancellery in January 1946. In 1946 he was sent to the state council of the American occupation area in Stuttgart as a Bavarian representative . A year later he was appointed head of the Bavarian Finance Chamber.

Kraus was State Secretary and Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery from July 4 to December 21, 1946. On January 10, 1947, he was appointed Minister of State for Finance in the Bavarian government led by Prime Minister Hans Ehard . The currency reform fell during his term of office . On December 29, 1949, he verbally asked Ehard to resign as minister for health reasons, but officially remained in office until February 8, 1950, when the state parliament also approved the request. The resignation was preceded by the "Blum Affair" (also: "Hofbräuaffair") to finance the reconstruction of the Stuttgart Hotel "Royal", during which the minister was accused of favoring his son in filling a position as master brewer .

Honors

In recognition of his services to the political development of the post-war period, the municipality of Unterafferbach granted him honorary citizenship on December 10, 1949 .
