from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernd Protzner (* 23. August 1952 in Kulmbach ; † 10. December 2018 ) was a German politician of the CSU . He was general secretary of this party and between 1990 and 2002 a member of the German Bundestag .

Life and work

Bernd Protzner was born in Kulmbach in 1952 as the second son of an Upper Silesian refugee family. His father died as a result of a war injury when Protzner was five years old.

The Abitur in 1971 was followed by a degree in political science and pedagogy and the first and second state examinations for teachers and a doctorate. Since the end of his political career, he worked as head of the Career Service at the University of Bayreuth .

Professor Wolfgang Protzner is his brother ten years older.

Political offices

Protzner joined the Junge Union in 1968 and was its district chairman in Kulmbach from 1977 to 1983. From 1983 to 1987 he was district chairman of the Junge Union in Upper Franconia . From 1995 to 1998 he was General Secretary of the CSU under Theo Waigel . As such, it was highly controversial internally. He often “offended citizens, voters and party officials with his statements”. Many CSU politicians are “not particularly happy to be represented by Protzner in the media” because “every press conference, every interview” is a “risk”. In 1997, the tasks of the Secretary General were effectively divided into federal politics (Protzner) and state politics (Deputy Secretary General Joachim Herrmann ).

During his tenure as CSU General Secretary in May 1998 - similar to the then government spokesman Otto Hauser  - he described the PDS and the Magdeburg model (after the state elections in 1998 an SPD- led minority government with the help of the PDS) as “the dirtiest election in a German parliament since 1933 ". This was commonly perceived as equating the PDS and the NSDAP . Ignatz Bubis , chairman of the Central Council of Jews , called Protzner's statements - as well as the statements of Otto Hauser and other Union politicians - as a falsification of history .

On January 25, 1999, Thomas Goppel Protzner succeeded him as General Secretary.

Protzner was also deputy district administrator in Kulmbach from 1987 to 1990. He was a member of the Bundestag from 1990 to 2002. Protzner was sentenced by the Hof Regional Court to a suspended sentence of ten months for tax evasion . His appeal before the Federal Court of Justice was unsuccessful. In 2002 he was no longer nominated as a candidate for the Bundestag by the CSU district executive in Kulmbach.

With a view to corresponding statements from the Union, he spoke in the BILD am Sonntag of falsification of history. The GDR was undisputedly an injustice state. But it should not be placed on the same level as the Nazi system, which had the systematic murder of millions of people as its goal. It is high time that the politicians reined in their own people. "
