Roland Tichy (born November 11, 1955 in Bad Reichenhall ) is a German journalist and publicist. He was chief editor of the magazine Impulse and euro and the Wirtschaftswoche . Since 2014 he has been chairman of the Ludwig Erhard Foundation and since 2016 publisher of the monthly magazine Tichys Insight .

Life

Tichy studied economics , politics and communication science in Munich and New Orleans and graduated with a degree in economics . He then worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Health Economics at the Economics Institute of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

From 1983 to 1985 he was a member of the planning staff of the Federal Chancellery during Helmut Kohl's term of office and then worked as a Bonn correspondent for Wirtschaftswoche . He was deputy editor-in-chief of the business magazine Capital . In 1990/91 Roland Tichy was a member of the advisory staff of the radio commissioner ( Rudolf Mühlfenzl ) in the facility ( radio and television in the GDR ) and thus had a decisive influence on the reform of the German radio landscape. He then headed the “Corporate Issues Management” department at Daimler-Benz AG , which reported to the Board of Management.

In 1990 Tichy published the book Ausländer rein and in 2001 together with his wife Andrea The pyramid is upside down .

From 1991 to 1995 he was editor-in-chief of the business magazine Impulse . He was the first and only editor-in-chief of the magazine Die Telebörse , which appeared from January 2000 to June 2002. From 2002 to 2007 Tichy was the editor-in-chief of Euro magazine. In 2004 Tichy became known to a wider audience through his participation in the RTL career show Big Boss with Reiner Calmund . He was head of the Berlin office of Handelsblatt and from 2007 to September 2014 editor-in-chief of Wirtschaftswoche magazine . Tichy wrote a weekly business column for Bild am Sonntag . He also published some of his columns in book form.

In 2008 Tichy was named business journalist of the year 2008 by the industry magazine medium magazin .

In June 2014 he was elected chairman of the Ludwig Erhard Foundation . In January 2015 he left the Dieter von Holtzbrinck media group . Since May 2015 he has been chairman of the jury for the medium-sized media prize for journalists.

In 2015 he founded the, according to his own assessment, "liberal-conservative" opinion site Tichys Insight , an online newspaper on which more than a dozen permanent columnists and numerous guest authors publish and to which he himself contributes the eponymous column Tichys Insight . Since October 15, 2016, Tichy's insight has also been published monthly in print format with a circulation of 70,000 issues, with Tichy himself acting as the publisher.

In 2015 he became the publisher of the platform for contributions to debate XING Klartext . In January 2017 he resigned after massive criticism of a guest post by Jürgen Fritz that he had published on Tichy's insight , in which “green-left do -gooders” were pathologized as “mentally ill” . He had apologized for the guest contribution.

Tichy is a member of the board of trustees of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Foundation . Since 2002 he has also been a member of the neoliberal network Mont Pèlerin Society .

Positions

Tichy endorsed the conclusion of the Transatlantic Free Trade Agreement TTIP , whereby he was critical of individual points such as the regulation of patents in particular .

On the occasion of the attack on the Paris editorial office Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, Tichy protested against a blanket classification of the Pegida demonstrators as right-wing extremists and demanded that they be viewed as citizens whose concerns should be taken seriously. In this context, however, he also stated that the vast majority of the around four million Muslims in this country identify as Germans , and demanded that they must be protected from Islamism .

According to a portrait by Roman Pletter (deputy head of the economy department) in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , Tichy has been "a constant among German liberal conservatives since he protested massively against the euro bailout policy and the energy transition".

Awards

In 2008 he was awarded the Ludwig Erhard Prize for Business Journalism. As a reason, several opinions were given by him, including his criticisms of the welfare state, bank recommendations, distribution policy and economic stimulus programs.

In 2015 he received the Hayek Medal from the Friedrich A. von Hayek Society .
