The approx. 5.5 hectare urban quarter EUREF-Campus (abbreviation for European Energy Forum ) is located in Berlin's Schöneberg district in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . The campus around the Gasometer Schöneberg sees itself as a symbol of the energy transition in Germany and is the location for companies in the fields of energy , sustainability and mobility . Since the beginning of the site development by the Berlin architect Reinhard Müllerin 2007 international companies and research institutions settled on the EUREF-Campus. In close exchange and numerous partnerships, global players , start-ups as well as research and teaching institutions develop intelligent solutions for the city of the future.

The EUREF campus is a reference point for the smart city strategy of the state of Berlin. The concept of the EUREF-Campus Intelligente Stadt aims to implement sustainable urban development. In 2014, the EUREF-Campus was able to achieve the German government's CO 2 climate protection target for 2050. With a climate-neutral energy supply, an intelligent energy network, the energy-efficient buildings, the testing platform for electromobility and the numerous research projects, the campus should prove that the energy transition is feasible and affordable.

The city quarter is expanding its function as a forum and information hub through events on the topics of climate protection and sustainability, guided campus tours and company visits as well as informative projects such as the workshop on the energy transition.

history

2007: start of the establishment

  • The architect Reinhard Müller planned the EUREF- Campus on the former site of a gasworks in Schöneberg , which is to be developed into a Smart City for work, research, education and living. The focus of the development is on energetically optimized buildings, a local micro smart grid , mobility sharing and the use of renewable energies such as biomethane .

2009 to 2015

  • Start of renovation of the listed buildings forge and Messelbau
  • 2011: Start of construction on the first new building EUREF-Campus 12-13
  • 2001: Renovation of the listed water tower for the TU Berlin
  • 2012: Opening of the master’s courses at TU Berlin in the water tower
  • The EUREF-Campus already achieved the federal government's climate protection targets for 2050 in 2014.
The energetic heart of this Berlin pioneering achievement is the Euref energy workshop operated by GASAG . The burning of certified biomethane is used to generate green electricity , which is fed into the Berlin electricity grid. The heat generated in the process heats water up to 90 ° C, which is used to heat the offices on campus via an underground pipe system (or cool them in summer). In addition, a small combined heat and power unit generates the electricity for the energy center. Two gas boilers that can be switched on are also available to ensure a constant supply of energy.
  • 2014: Start of construction on the EUREF Campus 14 office building
  • 2015: LEED platinum pre-certification for the EUREF Campus 10-11 office building
  • Star chef Thomas Kammeier became the gastronomic director of the EUREF-Campus in 2015

2016 to 2020

  • 2016: The self-driving Olli shuttle bus from Local Motors started test drives.
  • 2016: Start of construction on the EUREF-Campus 21–22 office building ; Completion took place in summer 2018.
  • 2016: Opening of the ZeeMo.Base , the largest electric charging station in Germany, by Schneider Electric and partners
  • EUREF-Campus became a postal address and part of building addresses in 2016
  • 2017: The G-20 conference Africa Partnership - Investing in a Common Future took place on the EUREF campus.
  • In 2017, EUREF AG presented plans for a EUREF Zollverein campus in Essen .
  • In 2017, all buildings were connected to a local energy network via smart metering , which centrally measures and controls their consumption. Since then, the EUREF-Campus has been a reference point for the Smart City strategy of the State of Berlin .
  • 2018: The leading congress for mobility decision-makers - the Future Mobility Summit - took place for the first time with over 1300 participants on the EUREF campus.
  • A permanent exhibition in the Gasometer was opened in 2018 - Ey Alter is an interactive presentation with a focus on demographic change, initiated by DAIMLER AG.
  • In the summer of 2018, the first users moved into the new building 21/22.
  • The branch settlement at Zeche Zollverein in Essen did not come about in 2019 due to the special status of the World Heritage. Düsseldorf is now planned as a new location in the west ; Another EUREF innovation campus will be built there at the airport. The main tenant is the technology group Schneider Electric .

Economy and science

Event location EUREF-Campus

In 2018, around 150 companies, research institutions and university institutes with 3500 employees worked and researched on the EUREF-Campus , including

  • four master’s courses at TU Berlin
  • and the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC).
  • The innovation center (InnoZ) founded here in 2006 had to cease its activities at the end of 2018. It has long been considered the leading center for new mobility concepts in Germany. The driverless electric bus ( Olli ; see above) operating on the premises under his direction and a whole fleet of innovative vehicles were used for studies. 40 employees lost their jobs. The German railway , as the main shareholder of the InnoZ, gave the following justification: "was established as the InnoZ 2006, which worked by him questions were not represented in the German applied research to the extent as they now are," the unique selling point was lost and the financial basis was no longer sufficient.

The EUREF campus will remain the federal government's research campus for the Mobility2Grid project . Here research is being carried out into how a supply of electricity, heat and transport can be guaranteed in the long term in an affordable, safe and fully based on renewable energies.

Numerous companies such as Deutsche Bahn , Cisco , Schneider Electric , GASAG or Arcadis and startups from the fields of energy , sustainability and mobility , such as Ubitricity, SirPlus or MINT, have settled on the EUREF campus and cooperate there.

The 78 meter high gasometer is used by those interested in climbing with good all-round visibility. There is a small stage in its glass roof domed center and the whole thing is used for conferences or press events. For example, there was a political talk with Günter Jauch between 2014 and 2017 . The gasometer will be expanded according to historical models by 2023. In addition to a conference center with 1,200 seats, an office building with around 25,000 square meters is planned in the Gasometer from a height of 16 meters.

Organization of EUREF AG

EUREF AG is a private developer of energy and environmentally optimized real estate. It was founded in connection with the acquisition of the 5.5 hectare area around the gasometer in Berlin-Schöneberg in 2007.
