Eckart John von Freyend

Eckart John von Freyend (born May 22, 1942 in Berlin-Schöneberg ) is a German business manager specializing in real estate management . He was a member of the main management of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), head of the “Federal Industrial Property ” department in the Federal Ministry of Finance and CEO of IVG Immobilien AG. John von Freyend is chairman of the supervisory board of Hamborner REIT AG and EUREF AG in Berlin. Until March 2009 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the investment stock corporation for long-term investors TGV. Until November 2009 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Finum AG. Until July 2013 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of GSW Immobilien AG.

Life

After attending elementary school and the humanistic grammar school in Kempten , Essen and Hadamar , John von Freyend studied economics and political science at the universities of Heidelberg , Bonn and Cologne from 1962 to 1966 with a degree in economics. He is a member of the Allemannia Heidelberg fraternity . 1974 Doctorate to Dr. rer. pole. at the University of Cologne . With his brothers Peter and Rüdiger John von Freyend, he founded several companies, the focus of which was the Deutscher Wirtschaftsdienst publishing group until 1997 and the John von Freyend Verwaltungs- und Beteiligungs GmbH since 1998.

Career

After two years as assistant to the management of the wealth management of Fürsten Quadt in Isny , John von Freyend worked for the Federation of German Industries (BDI) from 1970 to 1988 , most recently as a member of the executive board with responsibility for education and research, energy and the environment as well as transport and Telecommunications.

In the course of German reunification, in November 1990 (until March 1995) John von Freyend was appointed director of the Federal Ministry of Finance as head of the federal industrial property department . His area of ​​responsibility included, above all, the responsibility for the Treuhandanstalt, for which the BMF had legal and technical supervision, as well as the privatization of federal investments in West Germany. Here he was involved in the privatization of Lufthansa , Deutsche Telekom , Yellow Post , Rhein-Main-Donau AG , IABG and IVG Immobilien .

After leaving the Federal Ministry of Finance, John von Freyend was CEO of IVG Holding AG from April 1995 ( IVG Immobilien AG since 2002 ). During this time, he developed IVG from a national conglomerate into a listed European real estate company with property holdings of around EUR 20 billion and large project developments. The stock market value rose from 683 million to up to 2.83 billion euros. Sales have doubled and EBIT sixfold. In June 2006, von Freyend resigned as a member of the board and left behind a rock-solid real estate company. In July 2006 he moved to the company's supervisory board, where he remained until 2009. Since 2008 the company has been in a crisis, which is partly attributed to the large-scale project " The Squaire ", initiated by John von Freyend and not canceled despite major cost increases . When John von Freyend gave up his chairmanship in June 2006 - one year before the start of the construction project - an offer from Bilfinger Berger for a general contractor was worth EUR 317 million, preliminary contracts for the leasing of 55% of the total area to Hilton and KPMG and permits for division, in order to be able to sell the project in individual sections. A financing consortium led by the Hessische Landesbank was ready.

In 2010, John von Freyend took over as chairman of the supervisory board of the Berlin real estate group GSW . In April 2013 the GSW supervisory board unanimously appointed Bernd Kottmann as chairman of the board. Kottmann was IVG's CFO under von Freyend. In June 2006, under the leadership of the Dutch pension fund and major shareholder PGGM Kottmann, the shareholders withdrew their trust on charges of nepotism and lack of qualifications. Freyends' dismissal narrowly failed. Bernd Kottmann and John von Freyend had repeatedly rejected the accusation of nepotism. The supervisory board then released Kottmann and terminated the employment contract. John von Freyend stated that he would take responsibility for the shareholders' vote and subsequently step down as a member of the supervisory board. A legal opinion commissioned by the GSW supervisory board to examine the selection process has unreservedly confirmed the correctness of the appointment in accordance with stock corporation law and the corporate governance code.

Honorary positions

In 2006 John von Freyend was co-founder and until June 2009 the first president of the ZIA Zentraler Immobilien Committee eV as the regulatory and economic interest group for the German real estate industry , which he led into the Federation of German Industry . From June 2007 to June 2013 John von Freyend was honorary president of the Cologne Institute for Economic Research .

He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lebendige Stadt Foundation. He was a member of the Presidium of the Federation of German Employers' Associations , a member of the Presidium of the Federation of German Industry , and Deputy Chairman of the University Council of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences .

John von Freyend was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Beethoven House Foundation in Bonn and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation . From 2001 to 2010 John von Freyend was spokesman for the board of directors of the Walter Raymond Foundation.

From 2005 to 2011 John von Freyend was a member of the Presidium and from 2008 to 2011 President of the DSW German Association for the Protection of Securities .
