Rally Fighter from Local Motors

Local Motors is an American automobile manufacturer whose core principles include the use of techniques such as open source and crowdsourcing .

The company was founded in 2007 by Jay B. Rogers. Proposals for the design and technology of the vehicles are completely created, collected and coordinated in an online community with over 30,000 members. All development steps are advertised as individual competitions. Other modern techniques used are 3D printers for creating prototypes and the abandonment of conventional painting in favor of an adhesive film. The resulting vehicle plans are published as open source under a free license and combine new chassis designs with existing components such as engines and lighting systems from established manufacturers. The basic principle indicated in the name stipulates that customers assemble their own vehicles themselves in workshops called “micro-factories” under the guidance of specialist staff.

In a first micro-factory in Chandler (Arizona) , the Rally Fighter off-road vehicle was built as the first marketable product since 2010. By January 2013, 60 of these cars had been sold for between $ 50,000 and $ 75,000.

In 2012 and 2013, the company organized an ideas competition called the “Urban Driving Experience Challenge” in collaboration with the German BMW Group .
