Monrovia is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , United States with 38,200 inhabitants (as of 2004 ). The city lies at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains . It's also a popular filming location.
history
Monrovia is the fourth oldest city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles , Santa Monica, and Pasadena . The city was entered in the register in 1887.
500 BC Chr. Founded Tongva -Indianer settlements in the San Gabriel Valley . In 1769, when California was under Spanish rule, the first Europeans came to the San Gabriel Valley. In 1771 the Franciscan order founded the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel there , which brought agriculture to the Tongva Indians. After the Mexican Revolution of 1839, the mission countries were nationalized.
The expansion of the Santa Fe Railway and the Southern Pacific Railway to Southern California opened up new investment opportunities there.
The Monrovia News first appeared in 1903 . In the same year the Pacific Electric Railway to Los Angeles was opened.
The Upton Sinclair House , the writer Upton Sinclair lived from 1942 to 1966, is a National Historic Landmark (house privately owned).
