action

Lucy Emerson, recently divorced from her husband, moves with her two sons Michael and Sam to live with their father in Santa Carla, also known as the murder capital, where they want to start a new life.

At first, Michael and Sam are not very enthusiastic about their new home, but Michael soon falls in love with the pretty star and through her finds connection to the local rocker clique, whose leader is David Star's friend. Since Michael wants to be recognized by the clique and also to impress Star, he agrees when David challenges him to a risky motorcycle race at night. When David later offered him a red liquid, which is said to be wine, he drinks it, without any warning from stars, that it is blood. It wasn't until much later that he found out that the members of the clique were vampires . The disappearance of countless children is on her account.

Because Michael's eyes are irritable to bright light, he has to wear sunglasses during the day. He's been sleeping very late recently and is torn between good and bad.

His younger brother Sam tries to get in touch with two boys who have revealed themselves to be vampire hunters operating in the underground. Together with them he wants to help his brother to escape the vampires. In a comic book you come across a paragraph that could solve your problem. You invade the vampire's lair and can kill one of them. But as a result, the other vampires are now attacking Sam and Michael's mother's house. With combined forces, Michael is also part of the party, they manage to destroy the attacking vampires. However, then it turns out that the top vampire is the new friend of the mother of the Emerson brothers. Only when the grandfather intervenes and can stake the head vampire does the ghost end.

production

The film was shot from June to August 1986 in the Californian city of Santa Cruz . The official world premiere took place on July 31, 1987 in the USA .

Others

  • Richard Donner, the producer of The Lost Boys , was originally supposed to direct the film, but declined. So Mary Lambert was hired, who later directed the horror flick Friedhof der Kuscheltiere . After creative differences, she was replaced by Joel Schumacher.
  • David, played by Kiefer Sutherland, who was impaled by antlers in the film , did not dissolve like the other vampires. It was slated for a sequel film called The Lost Girls . A corresponding script was written, but it was never made into a film.
  • The comic book Lost Boys: Reign of the Frogs continues the plot of the film.
  • Kiefer Sutherland, who wore gloves throughout the film, did so because he broke his arm in a motorcycle scene to cover up the injury. It was originally planned differently.
  • The movie's title track is a cover version of Doors' classic "People Are Strange" by British band Echo & The Bunnymen . The organ that is characteristic of the song is played by the Doors founding member Ray Manzarek .
  • Gerard McMahon contributed the lead song "Cry Little Sister" under the pseudonym Gerard McMann .
  • The Californian band Death by Stereo took its name from a scene in The Lost Boys , where the demise of a vampire was commented on with "death by stereo".
  • Michael Vampire, the lead singer of the rock band Vampires Everywhere! , was inspired to found his band by the movie The Lost Boys .

Sequels

  • On July 29, 2008, the sequel Lost Boys 2: The Tribe was released in the USA . The film was produced directly for the DVD market. Actor Corey Feldman can be seen here in his original role.
  • In 2010 a second sequel entitled Lost Boys: The Thirst was released. This in turn appeared directly on DVD.

criticism

The lexicon of international films described The Lost Boys as "fluidly staged" and "sometimes exciting". Furthermore, the film is "a sometimes amusing mixture of gaudy horror and aggressive-sensational music film, trimmed with slightly ironic hippie nostalgia."

Cinema found: "Tricky shower fun with 80s flair."

Moviemaster found that the film was "a typical Joel Schumacher film" in terms of its staging. In addition to the “brightly colored set design”, “everything is exaggerated a bit boldly, which, however, also takes away the credibility of the already somewhat abstruse story and thus any approach of horror”. It remains, a "pretty 'bitless' comedy that is just a teenage film with music".
