action

Larry Kozinski and Maria Hardy get to know each other at a wedding of Larry's uncle Phil and Maria's mother Edie. Maria and Larry are related by marriage. Their two spouses, Tish and Tom, start an affair at the wedding. The wedding party is over when Tish and Tom return. Larry and Maria therefore suspect something. Maria works as a paralegal and visits dance instructor Larry during her lunch break to discuss the unfaithful spouses. They get to know each other. As revenge, they plan to pretend they're having an affair too.

Phil dies at a family party. Larry's father Vince also comes to the funeral. This later advertises Edie. Larry and Maria have a friendship, as they say. However, they have already fallen in love with each other. After spending the night together, they both return to their families. In order to give her daughter Chloe a stable family again, Maria ends the relationship with Larry. Tish leaves Larry to live her own life.

Larry and Maria meet again at Edie and Vince's wedding. Inspired by Tish, who tells him at the wedding that she can't be angry with him, Larry goes to Maria and asks her for a dance. He can convince Maria to end their unhappy relationship. They dance together.

In the epilogue, Larry and Maria sail away with their children and live a dream they came up with in their brief relationship.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on February 10, 1989 that the film tries not to hurt anyone too much. The action shown does not correspond to reality. In the end, the viewer asks himself what the film is about. The direction by Joel Schumacher, who showed numerous details about two love affairs, is " intelligent ". Ebert praised the portrayal of Isabella Rossellini, who showed a " radiant good mood " (" sunny good humor ") and " instinctive warmheartedness ".
