Ralf D. Bode

Ralf Detlef Bode (born March 31, 1941 in Berlin , Germany ; † February 27, 2001 in Santa Monica , California , United States ) was an American cameraman of German origin.

Life

Ralf Bode grew up in Germany for the first 14 years of his life before his family emigrated to the United States in 1956, where he was a student at the Universities of Vermont and Yale . Always interested in photography and film, he was initially responsible for the production of training films for the United States Army when he was doing his military service in the US Army Signal Corps .

After his withdrawal, Bode began his career in film in the early 1970s as a cameraman for commercials and switched to independent films in 1974 . As a gaffer and cameraman in the 2nd unit , he was responsible for the production of Rocky in 1976 .

He was the chief cameraman as early as 1972 and from then on he was behind the camera for 49 feature films. Bode was at the zenith of his career when he won an Oscar for Best Camera in 1981 for his work at Nashville Lady .

In addition to his film and television work, Bode was a lecturer at the Los Angeles Film School .

Although he was always a non-smoker, Bode developed lung cancer , from which he died a few weeks before his 60th birthday. He leaves behind his wife Christine and his two sons Paul Bode (camera and production assistant) and Max Bode (theater actor).
