Jennifer Burrows and Ryan Walker met as kids and don't particularly like each other. At the high school and at the college they meet again. Jennifer only starts to respect Ryan when she learns that Ryan is in a relationship with Jennifer's friend Amy.
They later meet again in San Francisco and become friends. However, Ryan finds that he is jealous of Jennifer's relationships and in love with them.
Jennifer talks to Amy, with whom she shares an apartment, about Ryan. She is shocked when Amy kisses her. A little later, Jennifer spends a night with Ryan. Amy apologizes for the kiss and explains that she was afraid of losing Jennifer as a friend. Jennifer explains in the same words the night spent with Ryan. Ryan says a little later that Jennifer's cold reaction to the night spent together would hurt him more than any other experience in his life.
Jennifer is supposed to fly to Italy , shortly before that she realizes that she can't live without Ryan. At the last moment she reaches his flight to Los Angeles and confesses her love on the plane.
