Alexander Ross Winter (born July 17, 1965 in London ) is a British - American actor , director and screenwriter . He was best known for the role of Bill S. Preston in the 1989 film Bill & Ted's Crazy Journey through Time .

Career

Winter was born in 1965 to New York-born American Gregg Mayer and Australian Ross Albert Winter. Since his parents were successful dancers, he first learned to dance. When he was five years old, the family immigrated to Missouri .

In 1978 he went to New York and started working as an actor. In 1983 he was accepted at New York University Film School . Meanwhile, he spent many years on Broadway , playing minor roles in The King and I , Peter Pan and the US premiere of Simon Gray's Close of Play .

After graduating from New York University, he and his friend Tom Stern moved to Hollywood, where the two wrote and directed a number of short films and music videos. Winter found work again as an actor and got bigger roles in the films The Lost Boys and Rosalie Goes Shopping . In 1989 he got international fame when he played the two main roles with Keanu Reeves in the comedy Bill & Ted's crazy journey through time and its 1991 sequel Bill & Ted's crazy journey into the future .

Following these successes, Winter and his creative collaborators Tom Stern and Tim Burns were hired to develop a sketch comedy show for MTV . The result was the 1991 series The Idiot Box , which was a success for the station, but had to be discontinued after six episodes due to financial problems. Winter, Stern and Burns accepted a $ 12 million contract with 20th Century Fox to produce their own film. This was published in 1993 under the title Freaked . With many positive reviews, including The New York Times , Freaked became a cult film and was named one of the ten best comedies of the 1990s by Entertainment Weekly .

Then he took a break. He only returned to the film business in 1999. He directed the psychological thriller Fever . The film was shown at festivals around the world, including Cannes .

Winter then worked alternately in America and London. He produced music videos and commercials, such as For example, the Thelma and Louise campaign for Peugeot , some campaigns for Ford , one for Kellogg's Frosties, and the award-winning spots for Supercuts and Google in the US.

After a 14 year hiatus, Winter 2007 returned to the screen as an actor. He played a guest role in Bones - The Bone Hunter . He currently works as a voice actor for King Mole Man in Saul of the Molemen , which was produced by longtime friend Tom Stern and performed on Adult Swim in America.

He also played a supporting role in the 2013 thriller Grand Piano alongside John Cusack and Elijah Wood.
